Combing out dreads after 10 months to Re-do them

General Questions

Hi,

I havent posted any pics in a while...But My dreadies are 10 months n 10 days old now and I am in the process of combing them out to re-do them...am I crazy!!

Im so torn and confused...they have gotten shoulder length short...and so many different sizes mostly "fatter" than what I had wanted... I have/had 42 dreads and I wanted more like "60".

I have taken dreads out that could have easily been 2 or 3. Since I did all the separating myself...I feel like it could be done better. I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVED them up until about a month ago and looking at some of the super skinny ones and some of fat ones...when before they were all fluffy and full...now not so much.

I found a stylist that knows about doing natural dreads the backcombing style...as I started mine out TnR..

I have also seen where many started theres out this way, the initial hair started really clumps up and the new growth is absolutely beautiful. I have about 4-5 inches of beautiful new dread growth..but the reast is well blah.ive already removed 16 of them...

I was even thinking of letting them grow a little more but my hair "was" below my rib cage in length before I started 10 months ago...

NoBBY Loops! and Tight Zig Zags 3 month old dreads

Dreadlock Picture Gallery

Dreads are 3 1/2 months old. Is all this normal...what do I do to make it purrrty. My 18 year old graduates next month and I must look "presentable"...Just "Neater" I love my dreadies but some days they worry me, like today they are shrinking up more and more everyday and the loops and zig zags sucked up. Ive lost about 3-4" inches in length. Last time I palm rolled while wet all the zig zags and loops literally CINCHED UP made big ol' Nobby knots sticking out everywhere and I cant make them go away. I tried crocheting 1 of them and I decided not to do anymore. Im trying to leave them alone and just let them be, but if they shrink up anymore I dont know what I'll do!! :):)

New baby dreads 2 months old~

Introduce Yourself

Here is an update...Latest photo, was taken at my Shop here in Surfside Beach, SC...My dreads were started on NEW YEARS EVE ...so...I dont know if the progress is good bad...etc...but they are ever changing.

I have went down to only washing 1-2 times a week, I have had to dye my roots 2 Times now since I have started my locks. They are still shrinking. My favorite are all the pretty Glass beads I just got to put all in my hair. I will post a photo tomorrow. I am going to start carrying the beads in my shop!!

I will be getting me some Dr Bronners Castile soap tomorrow as I dont like any of the shampoo's I have tried...I've even washed my hair in Blue Dawn Dishliquid to get out residue Heheheh....It worked :)

Mostly I just keep it separated now, I try not to let them get tangled and knotted together, I still have a lot of loose hairs everywhere...and the loops are Out of Control. I have some Dreads that have shrunk up to 5 inches. I will be glad when the length starts coming back :)

I palm roll just a little when I wash it, while wet...I root rub maybe once a week, Thats it.

So far, I love them!!! Everytime I get discouraged or start to feel like I want to comb them all out, I look at the timeline photos of everyone and I know that the End result will be worth the journey.

Updates photo of dreads...I have lost about 3" in length, I have the craziest tight LOOPS and ZIG ZAGS. I dont know if they're fixable. I've learned to "leave my hair alone"...I have to rip apart a lot of tiny hairs here and there. Im scared to palm roll, the last time I did while it was wet, all those zig zags, SUCKED UP and CINCHED up and I lost length...all my dreads are Nobby and thick at the back of my head and thin at the bottom.

I still love it, I feel FREE and I laugh at it everyday, It has a mind of its own. :) One thing I would like to be able to do is root maintenance.... Some dreads right in the front have about 4" of undreaded hair...

Thank you all so much for your kynd words! Makes me feel better however...things have changed a lot since that first pic was posted...its getting DREADY!!!!

welcome but dont sew in anything dont do the other 1/2 just dont even think aboit controlling frizz let it get better over time

2nd clarifying shampoos are the most toxic iof all and arent safe to use except every several months to remove residues

and yes you have to rip them apart if they grow together

New baby dreads 2 months old~

Introduce Yourself

Hi,

Just wanted to hello to everyone, Newbie here :) New to this whole dread process/Journey as well. This photo is a pic of my Locs in their current state. They are doing some pretty crazy things and def have a mind of their own.

I started with the backcombing method underneath part of my hair...then t n r for the remainder, All of the backcombed ones fell out, so I took them out completely and redid them with The T n R method.

I wash my hair every other day with clarifying shampoo...no wax or other products. However I have TONS AND TONS OF frizzies and loose hairs...so I used a needs and thread for 2 hours the other night and only got 1 side of my head done sewing in all those strays...needless to say, its back to the same way it was.

Is there a solution for this...and My dreads all matting together?? Everyone says rip them apart!! But it seems soooo harsh, I mean some of mine really have a lot of hairs matted together near the root.

Any help would be great advice taken here!!

Oh and Im a 34 year old small Business owner of "The Lil' Green Shak Bohemian Boutique" in Surfside Beach SC. Been married for 15 years to my soul mate we have a house full of amazing children!! I've always wanted locs and never did it....Im not getting any younger, its time to do the things I want to do and not worry about what image society "Thinks" i should hold. Thank you all and Great to be here he he h. Peace love and all that good ju ju vibez.
