loops lumps kinks and zig zags in dreadlocks

Dread Maintenance

Welcome to the ride. I do understand the worry of length lost and I will share my photo with you not to discourage but for you to know that if shrinkage happens you will survive and you will still love your locs. I am at 1yr now and to say I had a lot of shrinkage is an understatement. I too was worried about shrinkage and have had long hair for most of my life, but was so afraid of short hair that I did not let my hair dread for over 20yr. and when I finally let go I now hair very short dreads, but think if I had let it dread 20 yrs ago? My dread dreads would be so long. Just enjoy the journey and let your hair do what it will. Peace

Dread Maintenance

Lost length is just part of the path. I put off letting my hair dread for over 20yrs in fear of short hair. Now in my 10mth my hair has shrunk more then 50%. Shrinkage just means your dreads are tightening and maturing. I started out with hair about 7-8in below my shoulders and now my dreads are above my shoulders. I actually think they are still shrinking! I may be an extreme case but I just think if I wasn't afraid of short hair 20yrs ago I would have these amazingly long dreads now. I too live in Southern CA and now I don't have to worry about putting my hair up because it shrunk so much I can't lol hang in there.

loops lumps kinks and zig zags in dreadlocks

Dread Maintenance

Thanks for the great post SE. I am somewhere around 3mth into this journey. I have very wavy hair & most of what is going on are zig zags. I included a pic(bad lighting, sorry). The only frustration I am having is that my once very long almost to the middle of my back hair has zig zagged up so much it is only 4-5in in some places. I also have large balled up ends in places too. I began this journey for many reasons; patience & acceptance to name a few. With that I remind myself the zig zags, balls & just crazy dreads are natural, unique & beautiful and I am enjoying the ride.

Yikes! We definitely don't want to buy from those people. Wish there was a member here who was a screen printer. Could have shirts printed and sold on the site to raise $ for this awesome site. I'm sure we would all buy shirts. What do you say? Any screen printers out there that could do some charity work to support this great site?
