How to make dreads stronger?

If I tug my dreads I can hear hairs ripping :x It makes me really worried :( I'm switching between dreadhead shampoo and pure clean by garnier frutis. I've dyed my hair a few times with the boxed stuff at the store, so I'm sure that is making my hair pretty dry. Any ideas on how to make my roots stronger?

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Only 8 months. I have jojoba oil, maybe I can get that a try today.
