twisting dreads
twisting dreads as a way of maintain dreadlocks
twisting dreads is common among African, or black style dreadlocks . however it is often overused severely.
Twisting dreads should only be used to start and define sections never as maintenance! heres why watch this and understand it before twisting as maintenance
update: the person in the above video has stopped retwisting for over a year now. he has seen significant improvement, yet is far from fully recovered after a year without twisting and multiple other treatments
he is still struggling to recover but has come a long way.
we urge you to never retwist dreads after day 1
how to twist dreadlocks just grab a dread and twist..but not too aggressively or tight
do not pay attention to the "products" you should only use pure aloe vera gel, no waxes or other gels
when to twist dreads
this is where overuse comes in. in the beginning twist when they fall apart, once they begin to dread and hold shape, stop!
over twisting can cause dreads to be twisted right off. however, a very gentle twist can be done when applying conditioners when mature if you wish. twisting already formed dreads does not really help them at all. Severely over twisted dreadlocks can cause traction alopecia permenant scalp damage and balding.
what to use to twist dreads
this is often very misunderstood. african hair may require more conditioning then other hair types, but the constant applying of gels and waxes and gunk builds up in dreads making them heavy and dirty.
a better solution is only use pure aloe gel, or shea butter/cocoa butter, and only when the dreads are dry and brittle.
I am trying this technique; about one month ago (april 20th 2014 :P), I've twisted all my hair into vanilles (2 strands braids), without separating my hair into those 1 inch square at the root (I want my dreads to very very natural and organic), and now, I let them lock on their own. Some of them now start to have some truly consistent knots, but I don't believe that I will have true dreadlocks before april 20th 2015. I'll keep posting pictures to let you know about the results!
it probly would..but why bother its uneesacary all u gotta do is let it dread you dont need any mothods at all
Does anyone know if this method will work well for "mixed" hair? I'm 1/2 AA and 1/2 white so my hair is very curly (spirals for the most part) and thick. My individual strands aren't super thick, I just have A LOT of them haha.
I have a dream of having dreadlocks saloon in Tanzania but I do not have capital to start the venture. Any one to volunteer on capital as am well experienced in that area
Is there any advice on the best conditioner/oil/lotion/gel etc etc to use on the actual hair in the very early stages of twisting and neglecting? I have some Pure Aloe but it seems to go quite flaky which Idon'tlike - I need something to stop the hair drying out too much?
moorz this is twists for african hair not twist n ru]=ip and u never wabt to crochet any dreads ever
once u tnr or twist or use any starter method..leave em alone to dread
So all I do using this method is twist, pull, form the whole dread then leave it completely alone? No need to crochet it or anything for the frizziez? I started one dread on my side but it got really thin and frizzy. What do I do about ends getting thin? I read alot of things on here but would like an answer for myself
dont retwist and u used wax wich is a dread killer so start removing wax right away once the wax is out leave em alone ..seoperare as needed thats all
SO I JUST STARTED MY "TWIST" DREADS AND IM NOT LOOKIN FOR THOSE TYPICAL AFRICAN DREADS, AND BY THAT I MEAN LIKE LIL WAYNES OR WAKA, SO IM GOING FOR THE TWIST AND NEGLECT METHOD, AND IVE HAD MINE FOR ALMOST 2 WEEKS, ANY GOOD PERSONAL TIPS?
yea exactly the best thing you can do i s leave em alone seperate as needed thats all
