drug tests

ok so my buddy just applied at krogers and went in for his interview the other day and instead of giving him a urine test they gave him a mouth swab. my question is how long can a mouth swab trace back to? for marijuana that is(i haven't tried anything else). im just wondering because i want to be getting a job in the future.
