What is your reason behind locking?

General Talk

I think everyone will have a different reason for locking, but mine is about being able to express myself in my own way, without worrying about other people's censure. Put simply, letting my hair dread is an expression of freedom. I am finally in a situation where I don't have to be reliant on the opinion of other people for my income, and so I am free to make myself beautiful in my own way, without relying on other people's narrow conceptions of what beauty is.

Dread wraps

Dread Accessories

I did a slip knot around the hair at the top of mine, it is a really easy knot and holds it pretty securely.

Claire's Natural Curly Dreads

Member Journals and Timelines

24 DAYS

I am so impatient, this process is hard for me, but at the same time it is pretty easy not having to do anything to my hair except wash it once a week! I have tried T&R'ing a few, but it hasn't made any difference to them, so I am resisting the temptation to 'help' the process along by doing the whole lot. It is all sectioning well, though the frizz is a little out of control. In these pics my hair is slightly wet as it got a bit wet in the shower and I used some salt spray to tame the frizz afterwards.

The back.

The right side

The left side.

I still don't have any knots anywhere, but it is all sectioning well. The hair underneath is straighter and more fine, so that is taking a lot longer than the hair on the top. It is all a pretty crazy frizzy mess at the back, so I am making sure to keep on top of sectioning that.

Despite my impatience the process is a lot of fun, I can't wait to see what my head looks like in a month :)

Natural dreadlock process

Member Journals and Timelines

I wash mine every Monday, it makes it easy to remember and it is good to get them clean after the weekend, which is when I am generally out and about getting sweaty and making my hair dirty. It's cool for me to look at your timeline, I have very similar hair to yours and have been going natural for three weeks now. Mine seems to be knotting up about the same rate as yours, though I wish it would go faster!

Do you think your hair has shrunk very much so far?

Comb out dreadlocks or keep them, that is the question

Dread Maintenance

You should definitely keep them, give them a chance to impress you! You don't get three weeks in without actually wanting them, and who are you out to please? Your husband? Your friends? Or yourself?Salt water should be fine for them, and it will simply rinse out, no need to wash. Use the baking soda/apple cider vinegar wash once or twice a week, and if your hair still feels too dry use some aloe Vera or cocoa/Shea butter on it in small amounts.Stick with it!

TnR dreadlocks Jonas timeline (Left to go neglect)

There will be progress, it is just hard to get a good idea what is going on from looking at pics! Remember, at this stage even unravelling is progress, it is a step towards your hair doing its own thing.

Help with Freeform vs. TnR

Dreading Methods

I am 12 days in and I still don't have knots, don't stress about it! From your pictures your hair still looks lovely. Just give yourself some time and don't worry about what other people might think, it's your hair, you are entitled to do with it what you will.
