2 more guides wanted dread extentions and dresadfalls

General Talk

I think they sound like fun. ( I was a goth kid in high school and always liked wild styles- just not the lame politics that went with it- like "you're a poser" etc. ) I would add a few to my dreadbabies for color. And again, since I am a do it yourself kinda girl, I found a good video on how to make them.
I like that it doesn't require any special equipment like some of the other videos I have watched. I think I will go to the beauty supply store right now and look for some cheap synthetic hair.

Introducing myself and question about how to be a nurse with dreads and not upset the boss

Introduce Yourself

Lol. Yesterday, I was wearing a tam to work and one of my beads came loose inside of my tam and fell through a hole in the crochet onto the nursery floor. "Darn," I said to the assistant manager and other nurse in the nursery, " I tied my hair back so it would be neat and stuff like this wouldn't happen."I thought of your comment about the beads, when that happened.Fortunately no drama ensued and everybody likes my tams because they have a light purple that matches our scrub color in them. :) the very last melon said:
hi Emberanna,
my name's Mel.. and i'm also a nurse... well i'm an enrolled nurse at the moment and am into my second year at Uni to become an RN........ in Australia.
I got dreds by the twist and rip method about 5 wks ago..... i figured while i'm at uni and while i already have employment at a hospital i may as well start...
i was also pretty concerned how this may go down as a nurse but,
so far have had nothing but positive comments from other staff.... have yet to bump into anyone from management...
i just tie my hair back and wrap a thick piece of ribbon around like a hairband.. and as my hair isn' too long i make the ends into a bun and no-one can really tell the difference....
In fact most people haven't even noticed. As long as you ares still well presented and tidy and clean and u dont massively draw attention to the fact u have dreds i see no problem.
I guess limit the amount of beads etc u put in your hair, because they could potentially be a danger....dont wanna be picking those out of a wound.......
I see it as a health benefit... Less loose hairs falling around the place :-)
Maybe when i graduate and try and get a position as an RN things may differ.. but i hope not... cuz my dreds arent going anywhere......
some-one commented to me that wouldn't having dreads be a health issue... but im assuming that was through small mindedness and the idea that dreds are dirty........
Good luck with your dred journey and your sailing trip.... carribean.. jealous much xoxox Namaste

Introducing myself and question about how to be a nurse with dreads and not upset the boss

Thank you so much everyone for your input on this topic. All the support, ideas, and encouragement convinced me to decide to start the natural dreading process.Emerald, I am glad my topic led you to this site and congratulations on your progress towards becoming an RN! It is a great career and there are so many directions to go . . . I myself specialize in Mother/Baby (postpartum) care.I found this site on June 2, 2 days after I had last brushed and washed my hair ( I tend to comb it while it is wet, scrunch it with a towel and let it curl/ air dry -then never brush it again until the next wash or it becomes a frizz ball). Anyway, at the time, I had not decided yet whether or not to consider this the beginning of my natural dreads or not. This site and the replies to my topic, however, encouraged me to decide that it was time to allow my hair to lock up and I am very glad I made that decision. I used the baking soda wash and vinegar rinse described by Soaring Eagle on June 5 and my scalp felt great- no itchies. And in fact, I have found that my hair and scalp are so much happier not being washed and basically chemically processed every 1-2 days! My scalp feels better and is not flaking- something it tended to do before, my hair is shinier, and interestingly enough, I have not had a single day I consider a "bad hair day" since. I love the interesting things my hair is doing as it decides how to clump and dread and I feel lighter like allowing my hair to be natural is a calming, peaceful, beautiful process.I have also found that baking soda is a great facial cleanser/exfoliant, and a really good deodorant. And I have had much happier skin since I stopped "processing" my skin with so many cleansers with 20+ multisyllabic ingredient.I have had no trouble at work and so far have been braiding my hair and using aloe gel from my aloe plant to smooth down the frizzies in the morning. Aloe is amazing! It smoothes the frizzies and later, my hair is soft and not a bit sticky or weighed down. Here is a picture of me today at work with my hair braided:

and a picture of me tonight after I let down my hair on the way home and cranked the natural AC on high (aka opened the car windows). This is also close to what my hair looked like this morning before I braided it and smoothed it with aloe.:

I think more people would be happy if they would let themselves do things like that. Everyone says "I wish I could do that" but you just have to do it or you will always be saying "next year" or "when I retire"Society wants us to think there is only one way to live. Go to school, throw yourself into college right away before you know who you are, major in something, get a career- often in somehing unrelated because you didn't know yourself when you picked your major, rely on your job because you have umpteen trillion in student loans, rack up credit card debt contributing to the economy, and pay your taxes all while making sure your car is clean and you have the newest bag and shoes. That is fine if it makes you happy but it is not the only way. Not the single possible path.People say, "that's smart, do it now before you have a baby". I say, if I have a baby, she is coming too, the next year. Boat children are some of the most well adjusted, well socialized happy children I have met.

I think our winter migration will be awesome. My husband and I bought a trashed sunken sailboat on eBay for next to nothing and fixed it up. I'll try to post some pictures of it sometime. We are going to live on it and kayak and swim and and whatever else we want from winter to spring. Then we will come back to Northern Va cause he fixes boats up here during the warm months. Maybe I'm biased but I think he is the Dr. House of mechanics when it comes to diagnosing a broken motor etc.

If you are using the patience method, they're going to develop very gradually anyway. You could probably just tie them up/back or wear a wrap most days, and your uptight director won't even notice until your dreads are most of the way there... by which time you'll be leaving for your migration (which sounds AWESOME by the way).

Soaring Eagle, thanks for pointing out the religious angle in relation to work. I'm hoping and expecting it will never come to that but if it should it is a great plan B. I wouldn't even answer if asked what religion I am because it really is none of their concern.Again, I love the wealth of knowledge here.

tie em back or cover em if u tell your boss your dreading for spiritual reasons they cannot say anything or risk being siedbuti wouldnt even mention it till they do then just smile real friendly sand say i'm dreading for religios reasons" if you are asked if your a rastas just reply (yes or no dont matter" dreads are a part of most religions including christianity judism hindu muslim and more..then walk awayno need to explain beyond that

Introducing myself and question about how to be a nurse with dreads and not upset the boss

Introduce Yourself

Hi!I'm Emberanna and I just found this forum which looks wonderful. I have wanted dreads for a while but knew nothing about them so, I began to research on the Internet. First, I found DreadlockHQ and Knotty boy, but having learned that the first thing you find online is not always gospel, I kept looking. I found a lot of info, some confirming and some conflicting, and finally - and fortunately- found this site.I want to start my dreadlocks now, and let them develop on their own. (I have medium-thick wavy Caucasian hair). . . In fact I may have started them 2 days ago when I washed my hair and then did not brush it . . . BUT- I am an RN at a hospital that generally caters to the wealthy and the "VIP" patient and our director of nursing can't even stand jeans. So how in the world will I get this past the bosses at work?Help me out, nurses and others working in settings requiring a dresscode: How do you make your hair "acceptable" at work? My ideas, so far, are to braid my hair during the 3 days I work a week, and/or partially cover it, tie it ip with an attractive scarf. What do you think?I have worked at my job for 4 years but ist returned after a 6 month break. This winter, I will be leaving again to migrate south on a sailboat and live in the Keys/Carribean for 4-5 months, and then back to work again. So half the year, my hair won't be a problem but I don't want to wait until I am not working because it seems from what everyone is saying, dreading in a healthy natural way is a process of time. So why not begin now?I think this site is great and wanted to say hello. Thanks everyone.

loops lumps kinks and zig zags in dreadlocks

Dread Maintenance

I love love love my loopy dreads. They are like curls teathered into a curled position. I don't care if I have loops and bumps forever. They are interesting.
