Why is the community here so against maintained locs?
Dreading Methods
my friend has maintained (croquet hook and twisting) for two years...and he's already starting to bald. My other friend who is African American has had his locks for 6 years and still goes to the salon, for SIX YEARS I have not seen him without something covering his scalp! hat, do rag, sweat band, you name it he's used it to hide the top of his locks...WHAT'S HE HIDING UP THERE? Well its been SIX YEARS of hiding because he over maintained and he must be balding. You don't want to hide your locks for six years, you want to show them off and set them free! Just some personal experience for a girl in the mountains...whatever you decide to do, take care~

dreads jobs employment issues
I was starting out when I applied for my job at Dillard's so I put my hair in a bun, dressed a bit polished for the interviews and didn't mention them. Now that I've been there for a couple of months its pretty clear that my hair is a little different from the other people I work with but since I am polite, prompt, and I work hard they haven't said a word about it 
Actions speak louder than hairs 
Once they see how important having this job is to you they shouldn't question your appearance~ good luck <3

ooo lavender, thank you SE I will be putting that on my grocery list. Sorry for the mistakes as I said, I'm still learning but I will say that I have never been disappointed in buying an essential oil and the tea tree was around 6 dollars, I don't remember the rosemary price but nothin too crazy.
I have a couple of questions if anybody could help me

and when it comes to tea tree oil I say everything because it has a lot of uses aside from using on your hair, you can find some other uses for it at earthclinic.com and same goes for rosemary <3 Hope I helped I'm only 3 months along so I'm a newbie haha but this is what I know!

You can they really help with a lot of things, rosemary helps with dandruff and also discourages mold I like the smell too. Also tea tree is a great one to have...for everything really and the smell is nice too. I started using tea tree for dandruff and it solved my problem so I also got rosemary because I was told it works even better so those two are my essential essentials ;p
Who else had/has to deal with people telling them they should get their dreads done "properly"?

haha! This happens to me! I'll get the "you should get dreads, I mean just do it already." haha well I have quite a few on my head right now they just aren't all the same size and they aren't globs of hair mashed together but thank you for your input My favorite comment of all time was by a girl that isn't very nice and she backcombed, croqueted, tnred, attached extensions repeatedly, and bleached her locks for two years and...finally took them out, I am always one to support people in their struggle but uhg I'm telling you they looked filthy and unhappy 
but one day she was talking down to me about how "you really shouldn't get dreads because dreads are so high maintenance and it takes forever to "fix" them and they are so expensive and hard to maintain!" I almost laughed out loud! but all I said was "...uh yeah I don't touch them, or do anything at all but wash." her mouth dropped open and she was so mad! "nothing!" she said stunned, and I just shrugged, she didn't even believe me! haha

Hey all! Since my knotty hairs are turning 3 months in a week and a half I have decided to purchase a stunning custom goddess bead created from one of my favorite etsy shops out of Europe. Since the shipping will be pricey and the bead so beautiful I want to make sure I order the right size hole in the bead, sizing is as follows 2mm, 4.5mm, or 5.5mm.
Is anyone familiar with measuring a lock for a bead sizing? If so, any tips on measuring how to's? Really hoping so, please share. Thank you~love & light

Thank you all for taking the time to read through this and respond so thoughtfully! Baba, I am glad to hear about your personal experience that brings me hope that she will learn to accept them in time Thank you, you always give great advice. Also tied up in knots, I think the calm environment is key. Elke, so good to hear from a mother and you are right that I can not change the way she feels about it anymore than she can change the way I feel about it, so I will just have to let it play out and respect her opinion for what it is. Soaring Eagle, I just don't want her to feel deceived when she does ask about them and pull her, "When were you planning on telling me this!?" card...but at the same time I like the idea of not making any sort of production out of it and just letting the inevitable question fall, so I will think that over and as for the ex Baba & Soaring Eagle he had a lot of double standards. Strong opinions on everything but rarely the patience to listen for a response..it was tiring. I'm spending time working on myself for a while so I can learn to love me just the way I am and stop walking on eggshells for the person I'm with <3 Thanks again ~love&light
