would you cut your dreads for a million dollars? (very serious and real question)

General Talk

thanks for the replies everyone!

ok ...a quick update.

i wasn't gonna update, but figured WTF.

the company is selling for about 2.5 - 3 billion. trust funds have been set up already using company stock (a big part of this is a tax shelter for my parents).

the trust is an HEMS living trust.

ill rcv a paycheck for interest earned on the invested principal, equalling about 200,000 yearly (16k/month-ish)......thats the numbers i was just given.....can anyone tell roughly what the amount of the principal will be based on that info??

-first 5 yrs my parents are 100% trustees
-after 5 yrs i'm 50% my own trustee, and they are still the other 50%
-after 10 yrs i'm 100% trustee.

well in front of all that we have been given a lump sum to pay off all debts, and buy a new car each, and $500,000 to purchase a house....so yeah we've been house shopping...lol

we do plan to keep working for now tho, and maybe gonna go back to school.

...about 60 days from now it'll be set in stone.

i still have not cut my dreads, and will prolly wait 'til the last min.

General Talk

thanks again for the great replies everyone!!!.....and a quick update.

...everything is still on track as i mentioned. ....it'll be w/in this coming month that i will know the details, and i will keep u guys posted, and will prolly need more advice.

talked to my mom yesterday, and she doesn't bring up the dreads anymore (she knows that she has already made her stand on that).

i keep hearing that my son (hunter)...is going to grow up a very privy child in a nice home (we currently live in a huge 5 bedroom mountain house/cabin that was built in 1937).

...we don't really "want" a "nice home"....we love our mountain cabin....but ok.

i really don't know what to expect regarding this right now.

i'm supposed to fly to texas and talk to "wealth managers" soon.

also told that this money comes w/ "conditions"....(well already figured that out...duhhhh)

drugs and alky...not to be tolerated....(sure i figured that)

...so i just quit smoking weed...big deal (still grow it legally tho)...., and i only chug a cpl steel reserves a night.....lol

my parents are soooooooooo sick of drugs and alcohol w/in our family that its not even funny.

i'm told that my sis will probably be monitored her whole life regarding this.

...and now u prolly see y dreads to conservative texans are a no-no (to them they represent drugs).

anyway..just wanted to keep u guys posted, and i will keep u posted for those that care.

i'll cut my hair at last second, and not a min. before.

General Talk

great post from my other forum:

Yukon, long time bud... i havnt posted in a long time but i found this thread intriguing, more so by the responses from individuals than the situation itself!

The shift in people attitude towards YOU seemed to change the minute you brought up $$$$$, i could comment on all the psychology going into the different stances people have on your situation but i digress...

i understand the importance you are putting into your hair, because it means something to you for multiple reasons... but in the larger picture your hair isent even a fraction of the issues going into this situation.

your issues with your parents will not be solved by you cutting your hair, or jumping through the hoops to attain your financial security ... but it is a means to an end... these days it is those of us who are "enlightened" that have to take the steps to mend relationships especially with old fashioned parents who grew up with their way of thinking being RIGHT, and the normal way ... if or when you work things out with your parents it will have to be you making the steps to open up the communication and understanding...

on one hand you dont want to feel like your bowing to your parents wishes to receive this money, and in turn feeling like your giving something up within yourself.

i would suggest to not compromise yourself(even if this includes cutting your hair), be real with your parents as much as you possibly can , but at this point this is all business with your parents, they arent calling all their kids down to reconnect hugs and kisses status... this is about their kids futures, and will probly KNOW what is best for you, even though you dont realize it.

So at this point you could refuse the money, and give your parents the big fuck you, which might feel good for a minute, but would not lead to there ever being a possibility of a relationship with them... in their eyes this is their way of reaching out to their kids, and trying to do something that will help them out for the rest of their lives.

I would accept what they have to offer, but as a MAN, you have your life and family, i would accept whatever they are willing to give you on YOUR terms, if they want to put some stipulation in about where you live, or what you do... then i would personally turn down the conditions, in which case i would go the route of setting your son up for life...

if you have to clean up a little for them to feel better about you receiving a large amount of money than do it! just keep them out of the personal aspect of your life, aka life decisions.

anyways best wishes with your situation, and good luck with this thread

it is a tough call

billions of dollars are a big temptation hard as hell to say no to

but lets look at it another way

look at it like a job

almost everyone i knew who cut for a job..didnt get the job anyway

almost everyone i know who refused to..got th job anyway

theres a good chance that cause they dont like dreads..and youyr lifestyle

you still wont get much cause they know you'll dreads and live your life your way which they consider irrisponcible

and after all its not dreads that reall;y prevent thfrom trusting u with wealthh perception of irrisponcibility

tha youd throw away the opurtunity

disapear into the woods

grow weed

and by thir perception waste the opurtunity by not startin g your own business or investing and gathng more wealth power

chances are a full time responcible ..and somewhat conservative job would do more then a haircut

i mentioned my best freinds court case and how thied getting her to cut

anothr freind in same exact situation did cut for same reason

and never got h kids back..cutting was no help at all

again looking at it from a job perspective my best freind worked at dominoes the manager cut her hours so severely she worked 1 hour some days

she tried telling her if she cut shed get better hours

she refused even tho we were striuggling ..badly at the time

few weeks later she was made manager th manager was fired she got paid double and more hours then should handle

the dready was in charge cause she stuck to her proinciples

heres what id do if your even concidering cutting

go

have 2 agreements drawn up

1 if u dont cut 1 if you do

if the 1 whu do is fair and reasionably close to your siblings agreements then cut in front of th..shed a tear make em realize how painful it is fopr you how much it meant and whr sacrificing

and ask to be alowed to keep a few a dread mullet ..rich kid in tht wiild man in thback..lol

even if your allowed only 1

but i would know the terms..in writting before the 1st cut

that whole scenario is 1 fucked up scenario....bullshit...bullshit...bullshit.

i have dreads ...so what the fuck!

I don't know. I can't stand main stream religion. But my girlfriend extended family is catholic. I've been to a few wakes to the church. To me, the overuse of jewels and gold is obnoxious. It's an image I would not want to put out for myself when people visit. But that church has a significant feeling for those religious attendats. They look at the decorations as a tribute to their god.

Locks are no different. Most of us here have spiritual reasons for ours. But to people who see them and don't feel what we feel, we're putting out an image of who we are.

Conscious or not, people are going to look at us and form an opinion. It's not different than an alter, robes, priests collars, etc.

We've probably all seen nuns not wearing a habit. You'd never know that they feel like they are married to god from looking at them. Even if you have to cut your locks, you'll always be a dread head if you feel like it inside. And if you can grow them back, great. If not, the feeling is still there, and how you act is still there

bro that is profound and really helps my thoughts through this.

man i wanna medicate myself like crazy right now (weed...and i grow lots)...dont use much tho.

....its a cpl months from when ill have to change up .... i really really wanna just be like f-you, so-what, i have dreads, and i have no regard for our opinion.

...but at the same time i have a son and family and i want the best for everyone...(well not for everyone) i don't care about most ppl beyond my very immediate family.

i dont know...i'm not cool w/ cutting my hair right now, and prolly wont because i dont think in the end that ill be denied benefits because.

i just wanna travel to my final destination...the alaska bush.

i will not ever feel at peace until i can have a backwoods home and a self-sufficient lifestyle in alaska.

...so a compromise regarding a fuckin haircut is prolly in order.

tons and tons of replies regarding this on the weed forums...here is one:

I will say this. Bro your appearance does not define the person you are or what you stand for. It is just an image. Just an Image. Your dreads do not define you but more limit you as they automaticly put you in a box and people will label you a certain way. I let my actions, thoughts, and words define the person Iam. I think this would be a good lesson for your son. That its not about your image but being smart and playing the game.

would you cut your dreads for a million dollars? (very serious and real question)

General Talk

ok...here is the situation...this could get really long so i apologize in advance, but i really would like to hear some thought about this.

...and the million dollars is on the very, very, very, low end of the spectrum that i'm dealing with here. (i just threw it out as a large number)

my parents are very wealthy CONSERVATIVE texas oil and gas ppl. they are part owners of the first natural gas company to build a mid-stream natural gas pipeline in the marcellus shale area (w.virgina, pensylvania)(company is in texas, and they commute weekly by private plane)

the company was put together from scratch like 2 years ago, and they are now set to sell the company this month for billions. (17 companies have made offers, 4 are being considered)

well i'm one of 5 kids that is about to rcv. a huge amount of money i guess in the form of a "trust fund" or something sim.....as my parents want to share this payday w/ family and charity)

i do not know anything about having lots of money like that....each of us 5 will have to travel individually to texas w/in a cpl months to meet w/ a "wealth mgt. team".

i don't know how trust funds work, i don't know anything but living paycheck to paycheck.

my dad who is the main person behind all this is very conservative as i've said, and is evaluating the 5 of us and making determinations as to how each individuals funds will be set up.

my sis just got out of rehab for drugs and alcohol...so her set-up is gonna be way different than mine, and she's gonna be monitored like crazy.

my parents HATE dreadlocks....so i'm gonna have to cut mine before i meet w/ my family this month at their house in beaver creek, as it will make a difference in what goes down.

....super fucked up that it's like that, but it really is..... and i've been told in no uncertain terms that me showing up w/ dreads is not gonna fly.

...but for my family and especially for my son's sake i'll play the game.

...once everything is ironed out tho....i'm not gonna cut or comb my hair ever again.

...sounds petty and stupid to most i'm sure, but i've had dreads literally half my life (im 39) ...3 dif. times...and wanted this to be my last....i guess ill have to start over again...errrrrrrrrrr!

any advice or thoughts about all that....also i'll clarify anything if needed.

...and please give me advice for how to deal w/ this on my end...like i said i don't have a clue here.
