my turn to twist up

Introduce Yourself

I'd say let your hair dread naturally! The receding hairline doesn't matter, and you will look fine. I don't know why you said it is your turn to 'twist up'. People that twist their hair to start have African hair. Caucasian hair can't be twisted. If you want to use any method to start, just use twist and rip (which is much different than twisting). But I know from experience that forced sectioning can cause hairs to get pulled from the scalp, so make sure you let your hair section naturally for 1-2 weeks at least!

Questions about half twist n ripped hair

Dread Maintenance

The last time I started my dreads with t&r without letting my hair section naturally, many of the ones in the back started splitting at the roots because the sections didn't belong together. Shrinkage will indeed happen with t&r locks, it really just depends on how tight you did the t&r and how long your hair was to begin with on how MUCH shrinkage will occur.

Natural is the best way to go, but locks started with t&r and left to go natural from there is still fine. It really depends on how YOU feel. It is YOUR journey. If you love your t&r locks just as much as the natural ones, leave them.

You can still just as well let the rest go natural. You don't have to t&r the rest, it is really up to you. :)

Best way to moisturize baby locks?

Help! Save My Dreads

I decided to do VERY gentle t&r on my sectioned hair. Even though I was being very gentle, I noticed after I was done that there were a bunch of little broken off hair pieces on my lap. My hair has a lot of damage from being dyed quite a bit, but I didn't think the t&r would amplify the breakage. Anyway, I was wondering what is best to keep it moisturized to heal the breakage without making my hair silky smooth!

I have Vicky's locking gel. I was thinking that might help! I also won't be using any sea salt spray. Should I just use oils and let the t&r untangle??? Fixing the damage is top priority! I don't care if the t&r comes undone, I just don't want my dreads breaking off in the future if this problem doesn't get solved!!

I need some tips for sleeping

Dread Maintenance

When I want to keep mine out of my face, I use a crochet headband. I make them on the loose side so they don't squish my dreads, but they aren't so loose they fall off of my head. I don't wear them to bed, but I am sure a loose headband could do the trick without causing any issues.

I'm back :)

Introduce Yourself

Many of you may remember me. I started an amazing dreadlocks journey a year and a half ago. What many of you don't know, is after my dreads were 1 year, I combed them out. Why? Because they were ripping lots of hairs out of my scalp.

I started my dreads with a 'starter' method of twist and rip with forced sections. I grabbed sections at random, but there was never any natural sectioning, so as they matured, there started to be some issues. I also 'started' them too close to the scalp, which inevitably is what caused me to have major problems. If you do remember me, you know I never did anything bad to my dreadlocks. I grew them out naturally, besides using the starter method, I never tampered with their progress.

Anyway, I tried using oils to moisturize; I even got desperate being in so much pain that I conditioned. Nothing would loosen them up near my scalp. I eventually came to a decision to comb them out. I am not opposed to t&r, I just think anyone considering that should AT LEAST let them section naturally FIRST!!!

Now we are to why I came back! I, of course, miss having dreadlocks immensely. I just didn't want to make the same mistake of forced sectioning, tight t&r, etc....I haven't combed my hair in 5 days. So far, after only a few days, my hair is sectioning quite nicely.

I am very excited about my new journey. It feels so right this time. I mean, it felt right before, but I was impatient. I learned patience during the process, but I mean when I first started before, I didn't want to wait for my hair to section or anything!

Above: my hair prior to starting my new journey.

Above: 5 days of no combing. I have washed my hair 3 times so far. My hair is dry in these photos.

Above: here is the other side. You can see after only a few days my hair is already sectioning a lot!

I missed you all! I am glad to be back and on a new journey! Although I grew my dreads naturally last time, I didn't let them form naturally. This time, I am letting it all go naturally! I will, of course, separate when necessary.

Off topic rant. Need to vent...I swear I got the heart of Buddah and Dracula combined...

If he said instead, "and of course she's black so blah blah...", it wouldn't be acceptable. Even though he is angry, there would be NO excuse for racism. Well, I feel the same goes for sexism. I would never make a generalization about men, even when mad, because I don't think that way. Excusing it because he is peeved at his sister is not a valid and acceptable excuse in my opinion.

Speaking as if all women are like that was an unnecessary inclusion in his post and the point, I am assuming, he is trying to get across (I did stop reading after the sexist sentence).

He has the freedom to feel however he wants about women, but when posting ignorant remarks like that, he should expect backlash from people who are bothered by said ignorance.

I couldn't read anything after you said, "Of course she is a woman so..."! I'm not interested in reading something by a sexist.
