Every 1-4 days. If it's dirty it gets washed. Regular predread shampoo seems to work best for me. I know it's not recommended but I also condition it once or twice a month.

Six month update. I have been horrible about keeping it up. I actually stopped caring and trying to compare my hair and it's progress to other peoples. It's been amazingly freeing. Summers I'm always busy outside and I recently landed a pretty cool job, with my natty glory! 
Some of them are less than 3 inches they've shrank that much. Still have some loose/lightly knoted hair that continues to give the illusion of length.
