When separating is mentioned above, they're talking about the roots. Unless you have some really big fattie dreads you would like to make smaller, all you need to do is separate the roots. Since your dreads are over 2 yrs old, you probably won't have to do even that. Mine are 16 months old and I haven't separated since the very beginning except once on a big ol' dread that had been torn into two. I had to separate roots once after and that was it.
