I can't do that this time of year, so now I use sea salt shampoo and it works fantastic. I also use a hair moisturizer made for ethnic hair which keeps them nice and healthy.

only exception is if the ones in the front are really annoying u blowing in youur eyes u can tuck um under the roots or twist n rip wem to start new dreads
otherwise just leave em alone
