Washing without water

I know it may sound weird - bear with me. I have been using either baking soda or besan to wash, and wanted to share that I get better results when I do not wet my hair prior to applying the mixture. Of course the mixture has water in it... but I'm not wetting my hair first - just pouring the warm mix on my head with a squirt bottle and rubbing it into the scalp somewhat and letting it sit while I do the other shower-y stuff. Then rinse out and it's super clean. Has anyone else tried this, or have some input?

Me either, thought that was the way to do it.

Must have been something I picked up when researching no-poo methods, then - I'm glad the no-water method is common here :)
