There's no reason to put bands on the tips. In fact, the loose hair at the tips is part of what makes the knotting process possible. I leaves hundreds of hairs to knots and tangle with to rest of the lock. Some people have even seen their locks fold in half because they had so much loose hair at the tips. It's fine.

Some people like to band them when they wash, only for those few minutes, because they are affraid of the untangling. But you shouldn't be afraid of it. It has to happen.

If you do decide to band the tips when you wash, only put them on loosely, and take them off as soon as you get out of the shower

Since you're just starting to see loops and bumps, the shrinking stage hasn't started yet. As those loops and bumps tighten, that's when the real shrinking starts. Most people lose about 1/3 - 1/2 their original length.

In the first year, you see a few stages. First, loops and bumps start to form. Your hair may not see to grow much because of this. It is getting knotted up and tangled (This stage takes anywhere from 1-8ish months). Then you start to have them tighten. As those knots and loops get even more tangled, you see shrinking. Since you are adding more and more knots. Picture a 1 foot long string. Tie 20 knots in it, and now it's more like 6 inches. Tat's what is happening during this stage (About 1-12 months, depending on your hair type). At this point, your locks may be tighter, but you should still have loose straight roots. The next stage is when those roots start to tighten themselves up. This does happen while the rest of the lock tightens, but is more obvious afterwards. Since your roots are slowly knotting and shrinking, it seems like your locks, again, aren't growing at all. This can take a few months. Once your locks and roots are tight (usually about the end of the first year), they will begin to grow like mad.

I had 1 baby lock right in the middle of my forehead hairline that was 1 inch when it finally matured. 6 years later it's 18 inches long. I've never had hair grow that fast in my life

It depends on how mature they are. Mature locks tend to not tangle together throughout the whole body of the lock. They tangle at the roots. As your hair grows, the roots become 1 lock, and then split off into 2 tips.

Baby locks can be coaxed into getting the whole lock, or most of it, to tangle together.

Get some hemp, or embroidery thread and tie them together with an open "X' pattern. Ixchel has a video on her page showing how to tie that pattern. It's super easy. Instead of putting 1 lock through the loop, put both locks. And tie them together a little closer to the root than she shows.

Do this same pattern with mature locks.

Baby locks will form into 1 lock faster than mature locks. Mature ones won't start until your hair grows out more. You won' even notice that it's happening for at least a few months. Just don't mess with those locks. Let it happen. Becausebaby locks aren't fully formed yet, they will tangle together and begin to progress as 1 lock. It'll still take a few months, but more of the lock will become 1 in that time

It's easy. Go to the top of the page and scroll over "members". Click "My page". Then scroll over the pic that is there. It'll spin 45*. A link will appear that says "change profile pic". Click that and choose the file from your computer that you want to be your profile pic. I think it has to be under 10MB
