am i washing too often??

Dread Maintenance

so first, i must say that my hair is a hot mess since i started dreading a month agolol... i separate my hair, but i almost never screw with the loose hairs and i just kinda let it be lol

anywhooo, i went out last night and a dude came up to me and asked if i wash my hair every day because it looks super dry.. i told him thati wash it every 2 or 3 days and that it looks dry becausei don't use any products. he kinda worried me when he said that dreads should only be wash once a week because your hair gets brittle and just snaps off.... i thought it was a bull, but i thought i should ask on here just incase.... i really don't want anyunnecessary breakagelol

i wash 3 times a week, but i've been trying to cut back to 2 times. i use dr. bronners tea tree soap... my hair doesnt seem much more dry to me than when i still used conditioner and didnt have dreads, in fact its still pretty soft, frizzier but soft lol

Do you consider yourself a hippie?

General Talk

i don't consider myself a hippie, but everyone else does lol... idk, i feel like the only reason the call me a hippie is because ill tie dye anything i can get my hands on, i paint and draw on my jeans, and because my grandparents and parents smoke bud with me.... is there evena true defintion of hippie anymore? or is it just what the mainstream sees as people acting in contingence with the counterculture of the 60's and such?

personally, if i everclassified myself as anything i'd say that i'm an eclectic. all the things i've experienced in life are what draws up my make and model. can't really narrow it down any further than that because the way i am and the things i stand for can change with each trial i'm put through and with every new thing i learn.

Shampoos and Soaps ~ Maybe get a list started

Dread Maintenance

i've used jason shampoo, i think it works fine for the most part but i stopped using it all the time because some ofmy locks seemed to get a little more loose and i started wondering if it had too many conditioners in it or something...

i still use it when im at my bfs house, even though i'm still not sure about the ingredients, and it hasnt caused any problems when i don't use it all the time.

A new guy needs help :D

Introduce Yourself

haha idk if you'd want my advice, my locks are even newer than yours... but i have naturally fine, straight hair and i have A LOT of it. so, needless to say, i end up with a lot of loose hairs when i wake up or after i wash it, like seriously, whole sections come undone. what works for me is using aloe every few days to kinda separate and tame my hair. i alternate that with a sea salt/water spray mixed with a couple drops each of peppermint, eucalyptus, tea tree and hempseed oil. the aloe works better for binding than the spray, but after a day or two it kinda gets flaky and itchy. the spray really helps with the itchiness andtames the crazy straight pieces... for me at least lol... sooo i hope this helps and i didn't just make myself sound all pretentious. like i said, this is what works for me. =]

Ancient cultural history of dreadlocks and their significance

History and Religious Significance

i LOVE the fairylock reference!!! when i was little i only brushed the top layers of my hair so eventually i ended up with a good sized mat behind my right ear. my great grandma(she was extremelyyyyyy superstitious) made a HUGE fuss about never brushing fairies knots out, that they're special for little girls... it turned into a huge debate and ended with my grandma cutting it straight off my head. much to my great grandma's dismay, she really wanted it left in, and to my mother's horror, who really just wanted it brushed out. lol it was covered by the rest of my hair, but i had a tufty bald spot for a good handful of months=]
