welcome but that pushing the dreads through the roots is 1 odf the worse things you can do

it will cause dreads to break and will cause you to go bald

just leave the roots alone!

Welcome. I have to warn you that that method of trying to tighten the roots actually does huge amounts of damage. If left alone, roots will tighten up on their own. Healthy mature locks only have about 1/4 inch of straight hair at the root. And it's so tightly packed that you couldn't even stick a pencil through, let alone your finger.

Every time you twist your lock through the root, it winds your hair tightly. This doesn't create real knots. it just twists the hair around itself and weakens the lock

Did you read the dreaducation tab at the top of the page, a section of methods? Soaring Eagle has listed all the pros and cons for each kind. Whichever method you decide to use after you read all the info, just remember to only do it once, never retighten any dread that loosens, they need to loosen in order to dread into mature locks.

Before you do any method, you should let your hair naturally section itself for a couple of weeks, it looks so much better that way, more natural. Those sections are where the dreads want to be, so those are the sections you will use. Where the hair meets the scalp, the section should not be any larger than 1 inch/ 25cent coin. Any larger and they take longer to dry, sometimes over 24 hours and are more prone to mold due to wet, and they will be heavy as they grow longer, pressure on the scalp. Some people like the larger sizes, so just be aware of the cons.

Educate yourself with this wonderful site before you start anything but natural sectioning. Stay away from conditioners & regular shampoos, never ever add wax or anything else. Purchase dreadlock shampoo or follow the recipe for a touchless wash: 1/2 cup Baking Soda mixed with 5 cups water, pour on head and leave for 20 minutes, rinse out very well, don't scrub hair sectioning/ dreading hair, after it is completely washed out, mix 1 capful of applecider vinegar to 5 cups water and pour on head and leave on for only 1 minute. This is a conditioner and balances the PH in the hair. This wash you can start tomorrow! Happy Journey

Welcome. How are you starting your dreads tomorrow? You can start tonight, just throw away the comb or brush if you want natural dreads. That's it, you started.
