I'd definitely love to see pics of your son. I'll post pics of mine when my wife and I have kids.

The salon route is definitely the wrong way to go for healthy locks. Most salons get good reviews within a few days of people getting locks done there. Before they realize how damaged their hair is. Once they figure it out, the salon censures the bad reviews. It's the same with Knotty Boy and DHHQ.

The big concern I have is that your son may not be able to control whether his keeps his hair clean or whether he is able to know that rolling around in the dirt isn't good for them. It's really the same with all kids. Kids under 10, in general, don't have the capacity to make informed decisions for themselves. They make statements like "I want hair like daddy's/mommy's." But that's not a choice. It's a statement, and not a thought out one.

I hope you'r making the right choice for your son. Go to the salon, but if they say anything about wax, gels, crocheting, twisting, interlocking, or anything else damaging, you should say "never mind". Don't let them do any work on your his hair if it is going to destroy it. You won't want to have to scrub all of the wax out in a few weeks when you realize it isn't helping. And your son won't appreciate the effort that goes into cleaning wax out. It is a hydrocarbon and will NEVER wash out in normal soap and water. It needs a detergent

Welcome. Does your son want locks? I know people tend to think that kids with locks are adorable. I do too. But if you are doing it for you, then you're wasting your time. In a few months he might not want them because they aren't mature.

Also be aware that for the next year, he may have some trouble with other kids making fun of his messy hair. And once he gets older, that teasing will get worse until he reaches an age where kids don't care anymore. You know, high school.

If you choose to go through with it, make sure he knows why his hair will look funny, and help him grow emotionally so he can deal with ridicule.
