they fatten and shrink 1st 8 months if the section at the roots is a quarter size but the tnr dread a pencil sixe it will fatten to qurter over time so dont worry bout them being skinnythey get fatter

welcome .. but babbas right you never want to thread the dread through the roots! thats notoriosly bad for them every spot u do that in is significantly weaker then the rest..plus it puts tention on the rioots which cause traction alopecia and a gradual balding! ever wonder why ppl who do rthat have wide bald gaps around dreads? they are losing hair and ir may never grow back once its gotten bad enough
Welcome, but you never want to tighten the roots. Thy will lock up on their own. If you thread hairs back through them, you risk exposing scalp and pulling your hair too tight. This can cause baldness even if it doesn't show up right away
