Uninformed decision

First and foremost, I waxed my dreads and will never do so again.

It was quite a few years ago now that I decided to have dreads and I am unashamed to admit I made mistakes in starting the dreading process. I decided to used wax to form gunked together assumed to be dreadlocks. Although I was and am a relatively intelligent, mature type of person I still made an uninformed, in my opinion, WRONG decision.

The dreads I thought I had were in fact not dreads at all, but candles of hair and wax undreaded and just there stuck together gathering dirt due to the wax retaining the nasties (even though I washed them).

Eventually the dreads that formed were cut out before University and I started anew with my short back and sides.

I still have my amputated dreads now, probably due to some bizarre artist instinct that they will be usful one day. As an experiment I have being trying to remove the wax from them with hot water. The findings are disgusting.

When I was young I didn't realise the wide spectrum of information out there other than my friend group. The collective view of my friends being 'the only way to get dreads is to use backcombing and wax.' this, coupled with the fact I never got told the natural best way to do dreads(just the waxy way), resulted in a dready demise.

I had limited resources and knowledge so made an uninformed decision. I supose it was also hard to believe I can just do without the comb, when all I accepted was a learned reality, assuming I had to do something and spend money to get something.

I still think I havn't shaken that either, but I feel better being informed.

I have caught myself at walmart and other stores just staring at the jars of wax. They seems so casual and tempting like its totally okay to use. But then I come on here and hear all of the scary stories and pictures and that is when I learned that patience is key and it all works out in the end.
