I've been thinking about adding in some decorations for my dreads. I've seen some cool beads, and felt strands, wrapping them with stuff, etc. Anyway, I was just curious what you have done, how long you waited before you added stuff, if any of it causes dreads to become moldy and so on. Any info like "I wish I had known this before I did it" type stuff.

Thanks in advance

:)

Using embroidery thread is great fun - you can make up a felted dread with wool or just use a pencil and have fun wrapping the embroidery around the pencil or in my case felted dread, if you made up 2 felted dreads with a skinny bit in the middle of the 2 dreads, then you can thread it through your own dreads temporary to see how it looks for a couple of days. You could do the criss cross method with the threads and every now and again thread a bead through. Just google felted dreads and dread wraps with embroidery thread and you will get heaps of inspirational ideas, i'm often doing this and changing my dreads all the time, i've even seen dreads wraped with bits of ripped material and have little coins sewn onto my dreads. Coloured feathers is another great idea, i have even seen smone with a tiny dream catcher in their dreads, a way of drying my dreads with all the add ons is either using heaps of tissues or toilet paper as its so absorbant, its just so much fun playing around and changing things as you learn more ideas, anything added can also be taken out so you can't go wrong :)

I make my clay beads and also do some hemp wraps. I leave them in a few weeks or so. I started putting in beads after 2 months and wraps around 5 months. :)

These pictures were some of my inspiration for dreads to begin with.

for wraps use embroidery thread or hemp (unpolished, polished=wax & left behind a nasty black residue!) i've heard of people using yarn, just make sure it isn't anything that will pill & leave fuzzies or felt & shrink into your dreads...unless that's what you want! if your dreads are young you will want to change wraps often so you don't strangle your dread as they shrink & fatten. for beads move them often or make sure you can break them off/out if you don't want them stuck in there (some people do want them stuck tho).

I wore rings and beads in my last set with no problems... Just be sure to take them out periodically so that they don't grow into your hair.
