Any types of beads you can find you can use, even the dollar stores sell them now in their craft section. A good place to find funky beads is at thrift stores, check out the necklaces they have for real cheap, sometimes they have really cool beads on them that can be used, just take apart the necklace and use the pieces you want. If you see some wicked beads that have a hole just slightly too small, use a drill to enlarge it. Freak out your gramma and ask her for a necklace she no longer wears if she has one you like, many of the older ladies had ones with beads that kinda look bone, maybe she does. The thrift store in my area often have ones like those. Do you have a store in your area called Ardene's? Check out their jewelery section, I got some bracelets and rings that had little skulls on them! Just took those all apart for the skulls.....peace

Hey Matthew, you can put beads on the ends of your dreads if you want, they still allow the hair to move and do its thing to mature. The easy way to put them on is by looping a folded piece of dental floss through the hole of a bead, making a loop, put you dread tip in loop and gently pull it through the hole, Viola'....peace

Welcome to the community Matthew, we are all glad you joined this site so you can learn how to grow healthy dreadlocks. You are now at the beginning for your journey which will be a fun and wild ride. Below is a map so you can see what type of water you have. If it is soft water, you can use any dread or shampoo bars. If it is hard water, the choices are limited, as most don't work in hard water and slowly leave a residue build up. I also did T&R and made a post to help new members: http://www.dreadlockssite.com/forum/topics/just-starting-out-what-to-expect?xg_source=activity

Enjoy your journey....peace

http://www.dreadlockssite.com/video/why-not-to-palm-roll

There's the link to my video. Palm rolling only makes your locks look a bit neater for a few hours. But if you do it enough to see progress, it will severely destroy your roots.
