Welcome to the community Alyssa. You can do the twist & rip method yourself, if you go to a salon, they will add lotions, potions etc into your hair, even wax maybe, and that is a huge mistake. Doing it yourself guarantees that they are product free. All you need to do is stop brushing and washing your hair every 2-3 days in the early stages. Within a few weeks, maybe a couple, your hair will section all on its own. This is where you hair wants to section all on its own, it will tell you where it wants to be. Then if you decide you still want to T&R, instead of letting it do the whole journey on its own, you can do it. When the T&R is done, just remember not to do them tightly. The journey does go quicker keeping it free for though. The T&R sections will loosen, some will even fall out, and then the journey begins. They need to loosen in order to start maturing, so really, the T&R sets you back a step because going natural they are already loosened. The T&R is really only a blueprint of where you want your dreads to be, they are not dreads at all yet. If you still want to use that method, there is a video from another member on here showing how to do it. Read the dreaducation page at the top of the site to give you much needed information to get you started. If you have questions after that, feel free to ask, that's what we are all here for.....Peace
