looking like a mess!

I'm nearly five months into my dread journey now and am finding that my head is turning into a giant static ball. All the lose little hairs standing at attention as if to say: we won't assimilate! I'm at that pint where I don't feel like I look like I have dreads, despite the fact that there are many tightening locs on my head, there is the to most layer of my hair that just falls in silly waves over my dreads. I feel like I'm rocking the crazy homeless lady look: sans the lice and smell. One of the guys I work with finally said something about my hair looking messy, I laughed and said "well its about time!"I still love my hair, we are just going through an awkward stage together.

Thank you all for your positive input. Some days I like the mess more than others. I seem to like the way it looks the first couple of days after washing. Maybe it's leftover preferences from years of American society's "beauty training".

soaring eagle: I'll check out that group!

k8ekate: Thanks for letting me know. It was far from my intent to be offensive: I was simply conveying my feelings in a descriptive fashion (hence the "I feel" statement) using an example of an extreme stereotype. Perhaps placing "crazy homeless lady look" in quotations would have made it more clear that I was talking about a stereotype, not making a broad generalization of homeless people. I'm pretty sure I didn't say "all homeless people have crazy hair, lice and smell bad." On second thought, I'm absolutely sure.

To each his own, I don't like the writing style of all authors, either. I fudged my way through "The Catcher in the Rye" in high school with cliff notes because I didn't enjoy J.D. Salinger's constant and rambling digressions.

My messy stage never seems to end but that's ok. I agree with Tara, after a while I didn't care anymore. :-)

I have that all the time, I think after a while you don't notice it or care lol. Either way, messiness is a part of the journey, so think of how great the mess is because it's evidence that your hair is dreading :)

The awkward stage is the hardest to get through. That's when I started wearing a tam when I went out. I think that stage took a couple of months, crazy crazy times.....I don't wear the tams anymore. The other option is to loosely tie them back when going out. Just mist them down with water, (but not where they will be tied, you don't want them damp), use your hand to tame the hair, then tie them with a shoe lace. The texture of those keeps it in place. Just think of it as your crazy cave man days.....peace
