Welcome to the community Cameron. If you have African American hair, let us know when you post any washing questions, as African hair structure is different and needs more conditioning. This is the best site for all your dreading needs. Peace

Welcome. Have you checked out the dreaducation page, yet? If not, take a look. If you really want clean cut locks from the start, see how damaging that method is to your hair and scalp. You're intelligent, with 2 masters degrees. I'll let you be the judge of whether you are willing to destroy your hair for a look, or whether you want locks because they actually mean something to you. If you are set on a clean cut look, take a gander through the recovery forums. Then look through the timeline forums. Healthy locks take about a year to mature. But they don't always look goofy. Plus you can tie them back, wear a tam, or whatever you want, while they are forming, in order to keep their unruly phase a bit more hidden.

I see that you are worried about work. Legally, they can't say anything about your locks being messy. And they can't deny you promotions, or demote you because of them. Locks mean something spiritual to many people. So banning locks, in any way, is no different than banning a jew or muslim from wearing their head covering.
