Welcome. Back combing is a fine method to start. But don't expect them to be perfect too quickly. They will untangle after the first wash. And reback combing them will only delay progress.
Also, be careful with Dr. B's. it's great in soft water. But as a castile soap, it will not rinse out in hard water
