Since you're a year in, you won't need to separate them. They will unravel a bit, though. Because wax has really prevented locking from happening, they aren't as mature as they seem, anyway. But they, more than likely, won't unravel completely at all. The process is a bit labor intensive and aggressive. But it's well worth it. And because it's been so long, the wax has seeped deeper into your locks.
How many time did you apply wax? That'll be a better indicator for how long you'l have to wash them with detergent to make sure it's all out
Dreadlockshampoo.com sells a great wax remover. It's not expensive, but if you are strapped for cash, you can get a good tough-on-grease dish detergent. There are great instructions in the dreaducation pages. But I can clarify any questions you have. You don't use it like a normal shampoo. You need to let it sit for longer and massage it into your hair.
Plus, getting wax out takes at least 1 month of scrubbing 2-3 times a week. It can't happen in 1 or 2 washes

Welcome. How are you trying to get the wax out? It will never come out in hot water and normal soap.

Welcome. If you don't remember to palm roll, that's a good thing. Palm rolling is extremely destructive if you do it enough to see any progress
welcome definbately dont rub the scalp you shouldnt palm roll at all either
