Welcome. Lemon juice is actually really bad for locks, and your hair in general. Lemon and lime juice is citric acid. While not a very strong acid, it's more than strong enough to seep into your hair shaft and break your hair down from the inside out. When you see bleached hair from lemon juice, that's how the damage first appears. What it's doing is making your hair overly dry and brittle
Welcome to the community Leland and to the wonderful world of dreading! Castile soaps are not residue free and do not wash out completely, they leave soap scum. Our shampoo ingredients expert does not recommend them for dreads.
Like you said ' your phone went for a swim!) Would love to see some pics of you and your family when you find a way. Your desciption just has me very curiouse.
Welcome. How long did you try to let you hair lock after the first time with TnR? it takes between 1-2 years for mature locks to form. When people say it takes a while, they don't mean weeks or months. It really does take a long time. If they came untangled after the first few washed, that's completely normal, and part of the progression to mature locks. TnR and back combing don't "create" locks. They only serve to set up a blueprint for where you want your sections to be.
As with the wax, wax is a hydrocarbon. That means it is pretty much waterproof. So by putting it in your hair, you essentially make your hair water tight, and prevent it from ever getting clean.
Wax also holds down loops, tangles, and knots. Without those, no knots can form. No knots= no locks. As the wax dries and hardens it creates the illusion that locks are more mature than they are. But in 10 years, they won't be any more mature than 2 week old natural locks.
Plus, wax causes mold and mildew to grow in your hair.
But all is not lost, wax can be washed out with a good detergent and about 1 months of scrubbing 2-3 times/week.
On the other hand, crocheting does nothing but damage to your hair. This damage can not be repaired, because it rips your hairs into smaller and smaller pieces with each pass of the hook. Contrary to what many sites tell us, there is no such thing as a safe way to crochet.

If you have soft water, you can use any dread shampoo or bar that is out there, like Dr.Bronners. But if you have hard water, many of those do not work properly, nor rinse out properly, leaving behind a residue. For hard water, the best shampoos and bars can be found at www.dreadlockshampoo.com . The creator of those is also a member on this site, her products are fantastic.......so you started with twist & rip, so did I and I made a post to help you along the way. The first link here is from Soaring Eagle: http://www.dreadlockssite.com/forum/topics/beginners-guide-to-starting-dreadlocks?xg_source=activity My post for T&R journey is: http://www.dreadlockssite.com/forum/topics/just-starting-out-what-to-expect?xg_source=activity

Hey, a fellow Kansas City dweller, on the KS side though. I just started trying to dread my hair a few weeks ago.
