Hi Karen, Your hair, your journey, please don't let any family member get you down. Sisters do say harsh things, I hope you have the strength to not let her verbal comments dissuade you in anyway. You are not to old to dread, not at all. I started my journey @49. Wish I did start at 29, would had them for 20plus years now. You are never to old to grow dreads. The neglect journey is the best way to go, good for you. It will take 1-2 years for your dreads to mature. You will go through messy, crazy stages, this is where patience and will power comes in. Sorry your sister will be living with you during your journey, sounds like she will make comments during the messy stages, but again, pull out the inner strength when she does. We all get down some days or at one point of our journey, just come on here and voice your frustration with us. We all have, other members will hang tough for you and brighten up your day. Invest in a tam to cover your hair when you go out on those messy dread days. If you don't know how to knit one, buy some yarn and ask an elderly neighbour, take some cookies for her, they love to knit and it would make them happy to do it for you. So Karin, have a great crazy journey, on hard days, put a vision in your head on how your dreads will look in 3 years. That works for me every time.....Peace

Welcome to the community for healthy dreadlocks Karin. You will embrace your dreads so much more this time around, especially going product free route. Forgive me if it was already mentioned, but the dreaducation section will help you on a method decision. Twist & rip is the next best thing to neglect/natural/free form dreads. You are 11 years older and wiser and know that you want dreads, keeping them product free will allow you to keep and grown them for life. In your area you have moderately hard water only, so you have many options to dread shampoo & soap bars, lucky you. The Himalayan Sea Salt Spray is wonderful to use to help accelerate your journey. You can also make your own mixture. Whatever you decide for you, if you have any questions, as you can see, we all help each other out here, so just ask away. I bet you will start getting excited as the end of the month nears closer.....You can and will grow beautiful healthy dreads created by you and your boyfriend only, now that's love....Peace

Welcome. Hopefully you learned from your last try that kits aren't the way to go. They destroy locks. Are you going natural this time? At leat no wax, crocheting and other products/tools

Welcome. It's great that you stopped with the wax. But unfortunately stopping isn't enough. Wax is a hydrocarbon. It will NEVER wash out in normal soap and hot water. It's a waterproofing agent.

So until it is all completely cleaned out with a strong detergent, it will stay there. And your locks won't progress, and they will increase their risk of growing mold.mildew.

As for palm rolling... It's not worth it. Only doing it that infrequently doesn't help create any lasting knots. It only makes them look neat for a few hours. And because there's still wax in your hair, it looks like it's working better. But it does nothing to help. If you do do it often and aggressively enough to see progress, it will severely destroy your roots

Welcome to the community for healthy happy dreadlocks Emma. We want yours to be happy, so we can't stress enough that you get the wax out. Wax holds in water which causes mold, holds in smells, pollution, dirt, and can easily catch fire. As Soaring Eagle said, since yours are 3 months old now, get the WaxBGone from DreadlockShampoo.com for $15. Your dreads will feel lighter and sway with the gentle breeze just after the first application. Wash your dreads 2-3 times a week, clean dreads are happy dreads.

Your dreads will last you a lifetime if you keep them product free, they will always be clean and smell clean and you will always love them.

Enjoy the site and your journey....Peace
