I forgot to add that it is normal for hair to shrink between 1/3 and 1/2 of it's original length.

I don't remember how much mine shrank, but I do know that it was about 5 inches to start. When 1 of them was fully mature, it was only 1 inch long.

I am a bit of a rarity, because it took me about a year to see any progress at all. A few other members took a really long time too. It's not uncommon

Even a little can cause harm. It may just take a but longer. It can be a bit harder to get out, if t was a long time ago. Hair groes around the wax making the wax move deeper into the core of your lock. Water will get trapped ther. When this happens, your hair actually starts to rot because there is a swamp forming inside your locks. Hair degrades and turns to mush. The moisture never escapes, and when more seeps in, more rotting happens. It's a viscous cycle.

AS for the lose hairs. They need to be there. Those loose hair actually are what snag new growth and make your locks tighter ad your roots stronger. When you use any type of tool or interlocking or root rubbing,or palm rolling, you are destroying your locks.

Crocheting breaks hairs into smaller and smaller pieces. This makes your locks weak and hard. It can cause them to snap off in random places, and even at the root, leaving a bald spot.

Interlocking winds your hair around itself in specific places. This causes weak spots, and will create a braided look that NEVER goes away. It does get covered up by loose hairs, but it's always weaker than the rest of the lock.

Palm rolling only does 1 of 2 things. if you don't do it often, it won't create lasting knots at all. If you do it a lot, it can irrevocably destroy your locks. I did it for 2 weeks when I first started. 6 years later I am still trying to fix the damage.

Whatever you do, don't do to a loctician. They are scams. Loose hair needs to exist. You should NEVER be able to see your scalp showing in between your sections. That is a sign of a condition called traction alopeca. It leads directly to bladness

Welcome. It's good that you don't have free time for maintenance. Maintenance is only going to hurt your process.

If you used wax, it has to come out. This can take some time, but is needed for your locks to actually grow. DHHQ wax and any other wax will NEVER wash out in normal soap and water. It's a hydrocarbon. So it needs a detergent to wash it out.

I know you might have spent some serious money on any kit you may have bought. But chalk it up to a learning experience, and throw it all away.
