Welcome to the community James, glad you found us before your start your dread journey. Learn all that you can before you begin to get you off to the best start possible. In the meantime, while you are learning, you can begin by not brushing your hair anymore and washing with a dread friendly shampoo 2-3 times a week. In about two weeks, your hair will separate into sections which will be your future dreads. Then you can decide to go all neglect / free form, which is the best, or Twist & Rip, which is the second best method, or the back combing, which does cause some damage to the hair when forcing it up. Best to let your hair section naturally and let it tell you where it wants the dreads. If any form larger than one inch where the section meets the scalp, then just divide it. The scalp section is the size that your mature dreads will be, not the size they look at the beginning stages. I have a posting that will give you great information: http://www.dreadlockssite.com/forum/topics/just-starting-out-what-to-expect?xg_source=activity

The dreaducation section at the top of the site is a great place to start, it will describe all the methods to you. Feel free to ask questions, we are all here to help each other. There is a group on here that might interest you: http://www.dreadlockssite.com/group/ukdreadlocks Members from your neck of the woods....enjoy y our future journey.....peace

Welcome. Don't bother palm rolling, though. If you don't do it often, it doesn't help create any lasting knots. It only makes them look neater for a few hours. But after you sleep or wash, they go back to the way they were before. If you do it enough to see progress, it will severely destroy your roots.

Welcome to the community Morgan. No need to feel awkward here, just be yourself....Your journey has just begun, read the dreaducation section at the top of the site for great tips to get you off to a good start. When using sea salt sprays or rinse, make sure to rinse it all out by the two hour mark or it will dry out your hair. It does make a great accelerator to help dreads lock up...enjoy the site and your journey....peace
