If you are growing them for any type of spiritual reason, they have to accept it the same way they'd have to accept a Jew or Muslim for wearing a head covering. Your locks are theequivalent. And because they can't ban locks i general for the same reason, thy can't not hire or fire you for having them. You could wear a plain black tame instead of pulling them back. A pony tail will slow te progress. A tam will only cause you to need to separate more often. But it won't slow anything down
