I see you are from the States but don't know where, so here is a map to show you what type of water you have. If you have soft water, you can use any dread shampoo or bar with no problems. If you have hard water, many of them out there won't work properly and will leave behind a residue. www.dreadlockshampoo.com sells products that work fantastic in hard water, they are the best out there.
