I want to appreciate you all

General Talk

I agree so much to this ! I really love the people here. Wish I would be less shy sometimes and also greet newcomers and answer questions when I think I can.

Knots at the tips

Dreading Methods

Thanks for your answers :) Actually I don't mind having balls at the end or not, but I would like to minimize the risks of my (future) dreads not drying well. Thus I would have prefered not blunted tips ! But I'll see how it evolves and if it poses a problem later I'll figure out something...

Knots at the tips

Dreading Methods

Hello beautiful people,

I need your wisdom on a maybe silly question that is bothering me at the moment. I've been now a bit more than a week into freeform dreadlocks and I start having quite big knots forming. My hair are pretty curly and the tips normally form pig-tail-like loops. A few big knots have formed just there, at the very tip of my hair, and form hair balls.

I've read about dread tips that should preferably be a bit loose, or at least not blunted, to let the water out and dry more easily. Could it then be a problem, how my knots are forming right at the tips? Or is "artificial" blunting only that is not recommended?

Awww Thanks for having saved my hair :)

Introduce Yourself

Hey all,

I've been browsing this site for hours during the last week, so I thought I would also register and introduce myself ! I'm new to dreadlocks, kind of wanted it for years, but the idea of having to shave my head in case I didn't want them anymore always frightened me too much. I also basically always thought that dreads were kind of dirty (yeah... ignorant me, I know...), I thought you had to use crochet and wax, I wanted nicely rounded, all even ones... Well, I had like the worse thoughts in mind.

And then, looking for some info I fell on a lovely creature on Youtube, showing her natural dreads and referring to this site, and WOH ! That was a real revelation. Such a revelation that I definitely decided to go for natural dreadlocks something like 5 days ago. I have curly, dry hair that absolutely love to tangle, feels like they want to dread and I have been frustrating them all those years.

My profile pic is after my first BS + ACV + no disentangling wash, this morning... And I got some kind of loop-knot forming already (sorry, crappy pic). Can't wait to see the evolution ! I'm super glad and excited to start this journey now, and I want to thank SE and everyone for making this site so packed with info !!

Also my apologies for potential english language mistakes :)

On a side note my beard now has some baby dreads around the point where my face meets my neck, they took up residence sporadically about a week ago but have now stayed after a few showers, gives me great pleasure twirling them occasionally, simples things and simple minds eh?!

essential oils for dreads and scalp health

Dread Products

Eucalyptus works indeed so well for sinuses ! I love it !

Today I washed with baking soda and ACV again - starting to get quite big knots, hehe - and I used Myrrh essential oil in the BS. According to my sources, it is antiviral, antiinfectious, antiparasitic, and good for irritated skin.

I added only 4 drops for a liter of water, and rinced thoroughly, but my hair still scent a lot like myrrh now. I so love the smell ! Was half a good idea though, because the oil formed some kind of small resinous "stones" in the bottle, didn't dissolve or disperse at all. I'll try to find a solution to that because I had to be extra careful not to let those "stones" get out of the bottle and tangle in my hair...

Henna question

General Questions

Hello everyone,

Before starting my dread journey I used to use henna as well... And I'd really like to keep on but I'm pretty afraid of the incredible mess it could be, and if henna wouldn't accumulate in the dreads or something. On my "normal" hair it was already difficult to rince, so on dreadlocks I was thinking it might be terrible ! Any regular henna-user here that could share his experience? Thanks :))
