Are Salons Worth it?

Dread Maintenance

All that scalp showing between the dreads is hair being pulled tight to the root of the dread, that tightness, the tension on the scalp causes a condition called traction alopecia which causes baldness. I bet it hurts for days if not weeks at a time. With natural dreads you cant see scalp inbetween, the scalp is protected by hair, from the sun, and there is rarely any pulling, if there is it is usually just a few hairs that got caught in a dread too far away or something, and is eased by simply pulling them apart.

wow, thanks so much for this! I appreciate that you cared enough to look them up for me. One question though- can you tell me the difference in appearance of "real dread" and "fake dreads"? I know that fake dreads usually are done with dread perms, but the pictures you posted looked pretty good to me...maybe i just don't know what i'm looking for exactly.

thanks again!

I hate the smell of just hair

Introduce Yourself

You could make some tea from a native plant in your area, or rose water. There are always alternatives, one of them is that you change your mind.

peace.

Your Mom is clearly a very different person to who you are, she has travelled a different path to you, had different experiences, she has probably expected different things from society, she has perhaps felt it necessary to conform, without even knowing that is what she is doing, she is from a different generation, a different upbringing. I am of course guessing these details. If I can assume she is different from who you are. Why do you expect she could understand the experiences you and alot of others receive on the dreadlock journey? It is very hard to tell some one of an experience and have them understand fully. Tell her you are happy, even better show her you are happy, that is all a parent really wants.

I did have a similar experience with my Ma, I was dreadlocked, going to India for retreats etc, travelling all the time, I was happy, and when I came home to visit I was beaming, I could not get the smile off my face, I would tell of my experiences, and we had a great time, but she could not have really understood what I was feeling, but I was happy, it is surely hard to argue with some ones lifestyle if it suits them. If you are happy and you can show that on your face, there is not much more to tell. Live it, be happy, your Mom can't argue with that, she is probably trying to understand, but without your experiences, which is what has allowed you to understand, it will be much harder for her to get it. Take care, love what you are doing and others will 'get it' in there own way.

Just my opinion, I understand I do not know you or your Mum, I'm not trying to be a 'know it all', just my thoughts,

peace,

tim

ACV is apple cider vinigar, it conditions and balances the ph on your scalp and hair after baking soda wash. You dissolve the baking soda in the water, so the consistency is like water, then you pour it over you head. Dandruff seems to come after you start dreading for some reason, just about everyone experiences it, it will settle down in some time. Search 'baking soda wash' in the search bar on this page, it will tell you everything.

peace

Sard Wonder Soap????

General Questions

Yeah, that is what we need for sure. The shipping is the killer. Shipping by sea may be an option in the future, if we can find enough people in Australia to pitch in for DLS and have it shipped by sea, that is a very real option. Until then I will find something local, I've got a month of DLS left here, that gives me time to find some thing else.

Sard Wonder Soap????

General Questions

Yeah, I agree, I do usually stay well away from chemicals. I just had a bit of a moment, when I saw that soap, just a bit naive forgetting they are harsh chemical cleaners. I gotta find something as nice as DLS for a quarter of the price. :(

I would stay away from any industrial, household or laundry soaps with all those harsh chemicals for any type of hair and even more so for dreadlocks. I just starting using Dr. Bonner's as recommended on this site, and it is in my humble opinion the best shampoo and bar soaps hands down. Before that I had used Knotty Boy's Dread shampoo bar which was good and also all natural and residue free, but Knotty Boy's is nowhere near as good as the Dr.'s. You should dilute Dr. Bonner's as it is way too strong straight out of the bottle & so it'll last for quite some time.

Before that I used a homemade cleaner of Baking Soda followed by a Apple Cider Vinegar rinse. That was okay, and way better then what I started with which was my normal hair shampoo.

When I first started, in my ignorance, I kept using the same Aveda Men's Shampoo from before my Dready days. Bad Idea. You'll soon find out that dreadlocks, more so then any other hair type, will "hold in" any type of residue and chemicals due to all the tangles and knots. Those chemicals will slowly build up in your hair and you'll have to deal with that.

Normal hair shampoos in addition to lather producing chemicals & residues also contain "conditioning" and "detangling" agents that will work against your dreads locking up. On a side note I still follow up my shampoo with a salt water rinse made with sea salt (no iodine) when I can't make it to ocean to go surf. Use it only on your dreads and avoid getting it on your scalp as it'll dry it out & cause it to itch. I do find that the salt water helps dry out and frizz my hair so it'll lock up faster.

Hope this helps and keep us posted.
