Dread Accessories

Thank you very much, I'll check it out! :)

Hi Steenvick, I've got a UK based dread beads store which might have what you're looking for. I do a range of plain wooden beads that have large holes that I could decorate for you, or you could decorate yourself? I've also got plastic beads with 5mm holes that are super colourful.

My website is www.airria.co.uk

If you can't see anything you're looking for, swing me an e-mail jade@airria.co.uk and I may be able to help you out!

Hi there. Try doing beads the cheap way. Go to the hardware store and buy a drill bit the size of the hole you want. Now go to thrift stores for jewelery, go to dollar stores for craft beads or cheap necklaces. look around the house for small objects you like. Now all you gotta do is drill the holes to the size you want.....get creative.....peace

Dread beads

Dread Accessories

Do you guys know of any cheap places to buy beads off the internet? I live in Norway, and cant seem to find any place who sells beads with big enough holes for my dreads.

Thanks in advance!

Neglect/free-form confusion

General Questions

It helped, but I don't understand completely. What does the neglecting do to already twist and ripped dreads?

thank you! :)

Kubilay KAPUCU said:

They are not called neglect but after the tnr you "neglect" them. There is always neglecting going on so tnr then neglecting isn't natural/free form/ neglect. Hope it helps :)

Neglect/free-form confusion

General Questions

Exactly what I thought aswell. I don't really see how you could call them neglected if you started them by twist and rip, even if you stopped maintaning them, but of course you could call them more natural without maintenance, right? :)

Shalom. From my understanding, free-form and organic dreads are the same; formed with no manipulation whatsoever. I would think that twist and rip dreads can not be considered organic or free form because they began by being twisted. Maybe they can be considered "neglect" if one stops "maintaining" them.

Neglect/free-form confusion

General Questions

I have a couple of questions about neglecting and free-forming.

First off, is there a difference between the terms "neglect" and "free-form"? I know neglecting is letting your hair dread all natually without doing anything to your hair. But I've heard people saying that they have let their t&r dreads free form by not doing any maintenance, and therefore they were now considered neglected dreads..This is confusing me, and I dont know.. is this accurate?

If you start out with f.ex. T&R and stop maintening them, can you call your dreads free-formed dreads? Where are the borders here?

Dreadlock extensions?

Dread Accessories

Dread extensions are a good decision if you want longer dreads. I extended my hair too, and i had around shoulder length hair like you. In that case, i would highly recommend you to buy real human hair extensions and dread it yourself - as soaring eagle says, it wont feel like your hair if you add on synthetic hair for example.

In my experience, if you choose real human hair, after the extensions have started to lock up together with your own hair, you cant tell the difference. Its real human hair, it will feel just like your own, and eventually, you will even forget you have extensions. Also, I didn't experience any added weight either, that was never a problem.

Extensions is also a great sulution when it comes to shrinking, If your hair is already pretty short, and you're afraid you will loose undesireable much length. As soaring eagle says, many cut off their extensions eventually, for example after the shrinking is over and your dreads have started to grow again and reached the desirable length.

And last but not least - the best time to add the extensions in (in my experience) is between the 2 and 4 months mark. If you wait much longer than 4-5 months, your dreads will probably be so tight that you will have a very hard time putting them in.

You've maybe noticed that extensions is rarely recommended, but i think thats probably becuase dreads are a natural thing, and you want as natural dreads as possible, but I don't think adding on real human hair is any less natural, it's simply for the aesthetic preference. I wouldnt add on synthetics tho, because, well - it's plastic hair, and it will feel more stiff, it will be more itchy, and feel very unatural.

it worked so well for me, and maybe it will for you too! I would definately try, and you could always removed them when you want. If you do, let me know how it turns out!

tight dreads

Dread Maintenance

Thank you for the reply! My dreads are in perfectly healthy condition :) I guess I'll just have to wait and see what happens ^^ More loops will come at the roots as they grow longer anyway, I guess :)

Tara C said:

As long as they're not unhealthily tight, they'll most likely loop. I think it depends on the individual, everyone's hair is different, so their dreads act differently. I didn't have any loops except tiny ones until quite a few months into the journey, but now I have quite a few big ones. Whereas other have HUGE loops all over the place lol. If they're too tight it might take a while for them to create any looping, but looping is part of dreading, so you'll definitely have some. Just how many and how noticeable no-one can predict.
