The terrifying question of...lice!

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

I am sure this has been discussed somewhere here so if there is a link just send me there. Now that I have fab dreads, I have a lice "phobia". When my kids were little we occasionally hade to deal with lice, shaving the boys head and hours of laundry and having to go through the school nurse to get them back in school. But it's been years and I have been dreading my hair over that time but I still worry about it to the point where I am reluctant to have other kids over to our house and I actually haven't let them spend the night at friends because the very last time they went out to a sleepover they came home with lice! It was years ago.Am I being over protective about my hair? IF I do get lice with dreads, what do I do? I had used the olive oil soaked head method but you can't comb out the eggs and dead guys with dreads. I was wondering what you do JUST IN CASE! Thanks!

I'm an artist! That makes it easy! I was at a pirate festival in L.A. And I thought there would be lots of dreads...there were zillions of people in dread "wigs"! I was shocked to be quite possible, nearly the only play-pirate with real dreads! But at a pirate fest in the Bay Area there were quite a few more naturally dreaded pirates! I am going off the topic-dreads can be versital, even for pirates! Ahrrggh!

Does anyone spend a lot of time in the ocean?

Help! Save My Dreads

I was wondering how spending a lot of time in sea water affects dreads. I am concerned about the pollution that is becoming so prevalent in the oceans. And what kind of washing do you do after having your dreads in the sea? I will be moving onto a boat and fresh water and hot water will be limited. I figure there has got to be some surfers and divers here who can give some advice. Thanks!

This is the best dread web site, I am grateful to find you all.

Introduce Yourself

I have had my dreads for three years and occasionally come to the Internet for info and mostly to look at styles. I am happy to see the variety of discussions. The other sites are all about "product" and they are misleading. There are good discussions and great pictures here. Most sites have tons of info on how to start dreads but little or nothing on maintenance and nothing on life style. This site has all that and more and I am happy to have found it!

Why Dreadlocks?

General Talk

Oh, I love reading everyone's stories! I live in a place where many people have dreads and it's a pretty normal hair style in our community (northern calif) and there's been other soccer moms (like me)with dreads who have paved the way before me. I started dreads because it was the most natural and normal hair for "me" to have. It was a natural part of my evolution as a person and artist. What's the weirdest question you've been asked towards your dreads?

General Talk

I was in L.A. and I dude asked me "where" I had my dreads done! I guess down there people go to a salon or something... Of coarse, my mother asked a lot of questions at first. The usual ones about how you wash em etc...
