Dreadlocks Shampoo Bars - Too Conditioning?

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

Been on Biotin for the past year...

I practice yoga/meditation practically daily. Eat pretty healthy. Mainly vegan, high fruit intake, dont think its either of those honestly.

I think its honestly some hair types arent meant to go natural. Like mine. I know people with unbelievably unhealthy lifestyles that have thicker, stronger, and "healthier" locks and they also backcombed or crocheted their locks too.

Dreadlocks Shampoo Bars - Too Conditioning?

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

I havent tied them back with anything in about 3 years.

I used to use really gentle frabric ones every now in then during my first year, but even that wasnt that often.

All Ive done literally for the past few years is wash. I dont even separate anymore because my thinner locks were just getting mangled. Im about the least finnicky person I know with my dreads. No crochet. No backcomb. No wax. No palm roll. No nothing, except wash once to twice a week and I have more damage then anyone who backcombs, crochets, uses wax etc.

Dreadlocks Shampoo Bars - Too Conditioning?

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

The ends on some of them are fully locked and packed pretty good. Its right above this section that Ive noticed a lot breaking happening because the the lock(s) like this, arent as locked up as the bottom few inches, causing a massive weak spot which over time is where it will end up breaking, like 80% of my locks.

Ive switched from the bars to a 2:1 wash ratio of liquid:bar.

Well see what happens. My locks are going to be 4 years old next year, and honestly with the exception of a few (that havnt broke yet) they are the same size as when I started. Barely ANY growth. All damage, fraying, and breaking.

Sucks. Going natural was definitely not the best route for my hair type apparently.

Dreadlocks Shampoo Bars - Too Conditioning?

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

Hey all,

What has everyone's experience been with the Dreadlocks Shampoo Bars from Vicki?

I switched over from the BS/ACV over a year ago, and it seems my locks are becoming more and more fragile using these. Im thinking maybe they are TOO conditioning?

Ive noticed my locks being a lot softer, but Ive also noticed ALOT more fraying, more loose ends, and MORE breakage accumulating since I made the switch cause I was told BS/ACV was too drying and damaging...

I wash only 1 to 2 times a week, and used the neglect method. I dont back comb, crochet, twist, or anything and am still having a lot of problems with my locks the natural way.

Anyone else have similar experiences with the bars from Vicki?

Dreads Fraying and Breaking

Help! Save My Dreads

They get loose spots, and then they break off. A few months ago, that dread was a bit tighter, and a year ago, showed no signs of weakness or fraying.

I wash once to twice a week with the dreadlocksshampoo bars. Sandalwood to be exact. I do not use any sea salt anymore, and havnt for over a year or so. I stick to the bars. I used to tie my hair back just using my locks, and Ive stopped doing that about for about a year because I think that was causing them to become weak. But they are still fraying, and getting weak spots so I dont know whats going on.

I think I know what you mean about the wrap, but can you explain what you mean with pushing up the lock and wrapping it?

Dreads Fraying and Breaking

Help! Save My Dreads

So the past SEVERAL months, my natural locks have been fraying and breaking and I dont know why...

Heres yet another example:

Any suggestions? Should I wrap it? Will that help this weak spot to strengthen back up over time?

I really dont understand why my dreads keep breaking and fraying like this :(

My friends with backcombed and crocheted dreads dont have this issue, and are a lot thicker, fuller and healthier than my natural locks. Seems weird to me...

Anyway, any input will be greatly appreciated.

Congo Coming Undone.

Help! Save My Dreads

I hear about people all the time talk about forcing congos. Even here on these boards. Not sure what to believe...I even have a few that I forced to congo that dont have this problem. I honestly think it was because of the positioning of the locks I wanted to congo and recovering from serious damage from using Baking Soda.

Congo Coming Undone.

Help! Save My Dreads

So up until about a week ago, I was letting this congo do its own thing. Some of you may or may not know but Ive been having a issue with my locks becoming loose/breaking/etc. And this same congo has been developing a weak spot (like a few of my locks) where they join into one dread. I think its from constantly being twisted and bent (not palm rolling) at that same point, breaking hairs and whatnot.

In anycase, I decided to wrap where it was weak in the attempt to strengthen that part, and to prevent loosing a huge chunk of hair over time. You can see in the first pic, that at the start of the wrap, its almost half thickness of the rest of the lock.

s Now in the second picture, i tried to it to show how its still split into two for about half the lock. It was three, but now its just 2. Im contemplating cutting/ripping them apart, because I feel that would help with the weak spot because they are seperate and want to go in different ways. I would cut/rip the bottom lock (because it is thinner) at the start of the wrap, because that would also reinforce the other lock's weak spot. But would that mean I would have to have this wrap on the the rest of the locks life? Will they ever mold together from being wrapped together?

Any advice is appreciated.

Help! Save My Dreads

I think we should make a thread all about congos which will encompass why or why not to force combine.

What category should it be in? Maintenance? Dreadlock Styles?

Congo Coming Undone.

Help! Save My Dreads

Yeah, but very early on in the journey. I had a bead that held the two together for well over a year, and even when I took the bead off, it was wrapped after. Thought that would be enough time to solidify together.

Is that the reason its coming undone?

Im afraid to wrap my hair, because everytime Ive wrapped my hair it weakens the shafts dramatically and ends up breaking off later down the road after the wrap comes off.
