I have done everything 'wrong' and my dreads are awesome!

Dread Maintenance

i understand this is a site geared towards natural dreads, and i love being on my journey.... but hair is already dead people, you aren't gonna kill it. and if you really do end up screwing up your dreads, tough titties for you, guess you gotta start over.... but telling someone to go to a different forum because you don't like their methods and what not?? lamediggity. let's grow up and get a long, people.

just gettin sick of the animosity here is all. =[

Court=]

Life Issues Facing Dreads

i've been stressing for the last few weeks about the hearing i needed to attend to get a permanent restraining order against an ex. i dealt with multiple police officers and court employees who were extremely rude and condescending, even though i had tangible proof of violence and i was very respectful. one cop even said my hair made me look like a low life. i was really upset, it hurt my feelings and i thought my hair might (god forbid) prevent me from succeeding in protecting myself.

i considered covering my hair up with a scarf or a tam and even thought about combing my hair out again. but i didnt. as i was trying to figure out how to wrap my damn head this morning, i kept thinking to myself that this is not the type of girl i am. even before i began dreading, people's negative opinions of me didn't matter. and if it did bother me, it only made me more headstrong in my ways.

i handed the scarf back to my mom and said thanks but i'm just going to wear it down. she said she thought that was the best idea=]. i dressed nicely and took out my beads and all the other danglies and bells but i just let my hair be its natural funky self. i was second guessing myself by the time i got to the courthouse today, but it was one of the best ideas i've had.

my restraining order was granted(until 2014! whoop whoop!) in less than 5 minutes of being sworn in and while i was waiting for my copies, the bailiff came to ask me how long i'd had dreads. i told him not very long, a little less than a month and a half. he was really sweet about it and complimented them. turns out his teenage son wants dreads but he wasn't really sure he was going to allow it. i referred him to this site and hopefully he'll let him be one of our dread buddies soon.

i'm glad i didn't let all the negativity over the past few weeks break my will. its been a very tough experience for me. i almost gave in to all the bull but i finally just said fuck this, i'm not the one on trial here. and i'm not. i did nothing wrong. shame on those who tried to make me feel like shit when i was already terrified. after the talking to the bailiff, i've never been so proud of my hair.

best way to join two skinny sections?

Dread Maintenance

i think the x pattern is the best to go with, its waaay more quick than wrapping it all the way down. haha your arms won't get as tired

yeah, that and they also pull on my scalp when they start to knot up. not good when you already get migraines.the thicker ones don't seem to do that as much.

now i just need to figure out how to do the wrap. i've seen people do a sort of x pattern down the length of the dread and i would like to do it that way instead of wrapping the whole thing.

yeah i know what you mean! the thin one's can feel pretty weak sometimes. good luck=]

thats a good idea. i'll have to see if my daughter will help me do that. i just want this lock to be stronger down the road.

you could try wrapping them together.. a few of mine combined nicely after being wrapped for a week or two

dreads, cops, and court.

Life Issues Facing Dreads

thank you. my mom thinks i'm nuts but she wasn't there. she didn't see how they acted towards me. i thought they were going to haul me off instead. even when i showed them 9 threat texts varying from cutting my face to jumping me to killing me they wouldn't file a report. they made me wait to go to court the next day.

and i know i looked like crap the next day, i couldn't sleep AT ALL that night. they filing clerk probably thought i was some crazy druggie or something. the whole situation has just been so cheapening. i felt worthless to them. i still feel like that.

I feel you Hun. I had a situation with the cops in a domestic violence case in which I ended up in the E.R. And the cops were extremely rude and mean to me, I'm guessing due to the fact of my multiple piercings, ethnicity and tattoos and scars. It is unfortunate but discrimanation is still quite rampant, and they can easily judge you by your appearance, and get away with it. It's hard to prove that discrimination took place unless it's blatantly obvious. And even then.....I would also suggest a nice scarf wrapped around your dreads that match a nice outfit. It's sad that appearance can still be a key factor in getting rightful justice. I hope all goes well for you.

i've always treated cops with respect, and yeah they're normally kinda douchey anyway but the last week they've treated me with such a callous disregard that i almost dropped the whole case. the only reasoning i can possibly see for them treating me like a liar and a second class citizen are my dreads, my piercings and ink, and my age.

i'm very respectful and i'm quite eloquent when i speak to them, i don't use slang or foul language. but there's no reciprocity. they do the bare minimum, which is mostly telling me to go to a different city. its just ridiculous. you'd think i was a criminal or something. its a bummer.
