help with scalp gunk...please!

Help! Save My Dreads

Yeah, cuz wax or no wax I had the same problem and it literally looked exactly like the wax pictures, but just at the roots. Gunk, oily gross gunk. Does that sound like what you had?

help with scalp gunk...please!

Help! Save My Dreads

As far as it being wax related, it may be, but I think not. After I got prego and moved out onto a mt into a travel trailer I was sweating more (summertime) and showering less, gross right? Well I was washing my hair about twice a week or so and tried using backing soda acv, and that worked well but didn't help my gunky scalp any. I tried using some dish soap too, that made it a million times worse and way before I had tried using Rasta Mango and Lime, which feels really nice but doesn't do much in the way of cleaning. Evenually I even tried T-Gel to get rid of it, no luck. So anyways! I'm sitting around one day picking at a dread, this must have been like 3 or 4 months after I back combed and I realized the whole top part of my dread next to the scalp looked like the pictures I see on here of people who have waxed. I mean completely SATURATED with old, nasty scalp goop, I dunno what the hell else to call it but it was NASTY. So after two or so hours of pulling my hair apart and being completely grossed out by all the nasty stuff collecting (without wax mind you) in my dreads, I was dread free. I miss them now but can't handle it while I'm so emotional and, well, insane, while prego. I figured I would try tnr after the baby is born. I just though of this too, maybe back combing has something to do with the build up?? Maybe combing it all to the scalp like that makes it so that nasty stuff can't be washed out? And as far as the Neutrogena, you're supposed to use it once a week? Call the company and ask if twice a week would be okay, I don't see why it wouldn't be unless your scalp gets unhappy. Keep me posted though cuz, as I've explained, had the same problem and took em out because of it :(

More questions about essential oils

Dread Products

I'm wondering if you could usediluted essential oilsas a scalp mist on the days you don't wash. Well maybe not everyday but occasionally. The oils I'm referring to are peppermint, lemongrass, lavender, tea tree, and rosemary. I'm just not sure if it would cause skin irritation or not. I would think adding 1-3 drops to an 18oz bottle of water would be pretty dilluted right?? Just looking for opinions...

eww wax in my dreads! help

Dread Maintenance

A week? I would start over without wax, and you could back comb or tnr and the roots and ends will both be loose until they mature, that's natural...or so I hear :) I would suggest going with neglect, just my opinion though.

OMG what is wrong with my head!

General Talk

It looks like maybe your hair isn't parted straight down the middle either which would mean more hair on one side of your head, right? Have no idea how/if that would effect the size though.

is this normal?

Dread Maintenance

Sounds like alot of pictures I've seen on here, I've yet to have my hair make a really nice little knot on its own yet. Look through the pictures and see if they look like what you mean...I'm sure you can find one picture (at least) that will look like yours.

you know, i told my job about getting dreads for like 2 months before i did it. but when i came in with em they freaked out! but i told my boss that if they tried to say i had to take em out that i could get a suit for reverse race discrimination because we have an african american man with dreads andhisaren't a problem. but since dreads aren't normally looked at as a "white" hairstyle they were trying to treat me differently. needless to say, as soon as i mentioned racial discrimination they dropped the whole thing and let me and my dreads be! lol

Starting a journey

Introduce Yourself

Let it grow and leave it alone. And FYI I saw a video on youtube (yes youtube SE) who had beautiful shiny undreaded hair and all she used to wash was bs and acv so I guess it's never too eary to start that. I wish I would have washed my hair with it sooner! Soooooo cheap :)

is it normal for 1 month old backcombed dreads to not look like dreads?

Dread Maintenance

I just posted some pictures of my back combed dreads (the back is just neglect). I've had mine for 2 months now, check out the pictures...they do look awful. Washing helps mine look better :) I also had to go through and break up some of the bigger onesbecause the sections were wrong or too big and that left me with alot of lonely hair that is now doing what it's supposed to by itself...yay. I had tnr'd some in front or some stay hairs and I can tell you they look a hulluva lot better than my back combed ones. I should have just left it alone to start with! Lesson learned....
