GQZs 'Neglect' Dread Progress Thread (ongoing)

Member Journals and Timelines

Sorry for the crazy delay. Not sure if I have any good images of my neglect progress.

Unfortunately, because I am a business owner and have to deal with backwards people who have their presuppositions about these things on a daily basis, I decided to back comb.

I'm still going to just keep up with the neglect routine after they're completely combed (I'm about halfway done). We sectioned it last night, mainly using the natural sections I was already getting, and are about halfway up the back of my head.

I'm sort of sad that I just went with a "quickstarter" after making this grandiose thread about straight neglect but I decided that in a business situation, I'd rather have someone say "he has nasty hair but oh look, it's dreadlocks" instead of "he has nasty hair." I think my wife will be more prone to accept dreadlocks that look at least partially like mature locks.

haha... I know it doesn't matter much what people think, but the money involved matters to me. If they still have an issue with 'cleaner' locks, then it's their problem.

I'll post up some pics in the next few days.

Just realized I should've posted the back (it's the most dread-looking with huge curls)... I'll update again tomorrow.

Okay so it's been a couple weeks... my progress has been 'roller-coastery' but I didn't forget about you guys. I lost a hard drive's worth of files (gigs and gigs) including my progress shots but I took a few over the past day or two and thought I should update this thread.

Issues so far... I've had some dry/itchy scalp problems but I know think they're directly related to the fact that I was using way too much baking soda... it's still there a little bit but not close to as bad as before. Anyone have any ideas? I've cut back on the baking soda and it seems to be helping a little bit...

I was also getting a little worried because it didn't seem time to start 'seperating' and my hair was starting to connect at random (think basketball net) but it seems that they do their own thing (stay seperate, cling, then seperate, etc).

I've had hair seem completely locked and then appear all wispy a day later but all in all I'm happy and getting excited that I can feel most of my roots starting to lock and group together although the rest of the length of my hair doesn't seem to be so tight. I'm getting a lot of knotting directly at the roots (some very tight) and at the ends (found out how painful accidentally ripping connected hair apart is).

I attached a montage of pics since I haven't updated in a while... let me know what you think and any advice or encouragement.

Peace.

Thanks alot... yeah I liked my hair but hated having to brush all the knots out (I planned on locks to begin with though).

Here's my last attempt for now at the other 3 pics. Some crazier looking ones and one of my tam.

I know it's been a little while (I said a week) but I have picked a few of the better looking ones... They don't always look this good... sometimes it looks like quasi-mini dreads and sometimes it looks like a big hair mat. I sort of worried I haven't started really separating yet. I just slept with an acryllic tam I just got and it felt like I had one giant congo when I woke up... haha, but it's more normal now. Anyways... on to the pics. I may make two posts for more pics I'm trying to do them in order.

Also, thanks Shanxon and Natural!

Yeah it's listed in the ingredients.. http://www.dreadheadhq.com/dreadlocks-products-ingredients.php

He also throws in Guanidine Carbonate which seems to just be another type of salt.

Since it is the actual topic of the forum post, I though I'd contribute to the salt discussion. I bought a bottle at target for about $1.50 and I think I got a pound of sea salt for about $1.50 at the local natural pharmacy. The serving size is 1/4 Teaspoon and there's 491 per pound (according to my label). That means roughly 41 tablespoons per pound. So by spending about 3 dollars I have a bottle and the main ingredient and I can make 41 "Locking Accelerators" for $4 less than 1 costs. The only ingredient I can't account for (other than the random other salt he throws in) is Mojave Yucca, which I assume he puts in to help with dandruff. I'm not sure if that's even desirable for the extra $164+shipping I would spend for the ingredient by buying the equivalent amount of Locking Accelerator (if I bought it 41 times instead of making my own).

Even if I don't remember the exact cost (it's been a week) I absolutely guarantee I spent less than $7 on the bottle and salt. I also have oils and other things for other reasons that can be added to handle dandruff, and it would still be cheaper.

Some people like to pay to have things done for them though, I guess it sucks that they have to add their own water to the Locking Accelerator (what it's mostly made of).

@Ziggy - I actually share your concerns about some of the stuff said. I don't think SE was laughing at the fact your upset but that you're either not understanding or not listening. With a site of nearly 4,000 members posting daily you expect him to immediately know when something is posted that may be offensive? That's why the site has the flagging capability. Honestly I wouldn't have even read this thread had some kid not linked to it and said "come read it right now!!!!"

With loads of highschoolers and young adults you really think you're going to find every post in perfect, politically correct order? I'm not sure how long you've been on the Internet, but this is how it is. People get extremely bold sitting comfy behind their keyboard, often mean and insensitive. It's more useful to bring it to the attention of the mods and post to the user themselves instead of going on and on with the admin for hours.
