Why I prefer Neglect

Introduce Yourself

I find myself a verysentimentalperson. I love things that take time and have an awesome end product. The wholeexperienceof growing your own dreads and not having them salon made is so much more interesting and rewarding (Not to mention cheaper. I tried going that route once and I just ended up coming out my hair.). The two pictures I will be posting show the character that you are able to see day by day as the dreads continue growing. The first one is a freaking loop inside of a loop in a dread! That is so crazy! And the second one is a congo that I have seperated twice before and even after all of that, it is still wanting to grow together. I can't help but let it go ahead and grow, the lil' trooper. It is so much fun now that the congos are coming in, and I can decide whether or not to keep them. Over all, if you are thinking of doing dreads, go natty! If you aren't going natty, you still rock! God bless!

4 months of natty dreads!

Introduce Yourself

Hello Dread Forum! it has been a while since I have posted anything! This is just a little update.

So in the craziness of combing out my backcombed dreads and starting over, the journey has been so much more amazing. Every single day, new locks are popping up! in the 4 1/2 months that I have been redoing my dreads, I have somewhere around 25 legitimate locks. I am adding a few pictures for ya'lls enjoyment. Some of the dreads are just big and fat, while others are small, and others are crazy loops and zig zags. I love the character and I can't wait to see how the rest come out. You guys rock!

Happy dreading!

Dread decorations question

Introduce Yourself

What is this type of thing called? When you weave in yarn/thread? I am really wanting to do this when my dreads get longer and more abundant and just have one dread with rasta colors. Thanks!

2 months and a head full of dreads (kind of)

Introduce Yourself

Hello everyone of Dreadlockssite!

First off, I want to thank everyone here for their help with me and my dreadlock journey. It has been an awesome one and I am so excited to see where it will go in the future. You guys are truly awesome.

My story. So I decided that I was going to start doing dreadlocks in January of last year. I started with REALLY short hair ( Screen%20shot%202011-11-12%20at%2010.19.01%20PM.png ) and, after about 7 months of doing neglect, I got tired of no progress. So my friend and I TnR'd my whole head. Of course, they were completely loose and not tight anywhere, including the roots. So when I went to the beach, thinking that they would get tighter, they all just came loose. I had to redo about half of them multiple times. I got tired of that too, after a while. So I finally went to a loctician who backcombed them and then used this gel (don't worry, it wasn't wax. I made sure before I came in that she wasn't using wax.) After about a week and a half, the majority of them came unravelled because they didn't tighten up naturally and were forced into it. I am not downing the loctician at all, she was really cool, but i would have come in multiple times, at about $45 a visit just to keep them locked up. I have no money, so I just decided to screw it and washed and combed out all of the remaining dreads. For about a month, I just let my hair get longer and longer (we are at about 8 months since I decided to grow dreads at this point.) until I happened upon all the old youtube videos and all the posts i made on this website that got me so stoked into getting dreads in the first place. So I am happy to say, after two months since i restarted my dreads, i have 8LEGITIMATELYTIGHT dreads. I am a very sentimental person, so that is why i decided to go with neglect, just because i know that I will have a memory for each lock and they will all have their different meaning. So below are some pictures of one of the locks that I have, my hairlength, and my first congo!!! I put a bead on it so it wouldn't get too big.

Thanks so much for reading and God bless all of you!

Backcombing and what happened with me.

Help! Save My Dreads

Hello dreadheads! I have been on this website for a while and i have really enjoyed it. A few things. First off, around january of last year, i decided i wanted to get dreads! I went through all the youtube videos and all of the sites and i happened on two very helpful places and people. First, the youtube channel "eyeheartchrist". His videos are inspiring and helpful for the dreading process. Also, i came upon this website. After hours of research, i decided i was going to do neglect dreads. However, around 6 months, i was getting very discouraged due to little progress. (My hair was about 3 inches when i started, so i don't really know what i was expecting for such short hair). I decided that i was going to twist and rip them. My friend and i did it and they just kept coming undone after every time. I then went to a loctician who backcombed and my hair. Within a matter of a week, they had come completely undone. I then just combed out my hair and just started letting it grow. I wasn't able to pay to get them re-dreades so ijust gave up for the time being. My hair is now 8 or so inches long! I stopped combing my hair about three days ago and started using Dr. Bronners soap to wash every couple days. The results i have had in those days were more than i had in those first 6 months with my short hair. I do believe that length has a big role to play in how well your dreads grow. Here are some pictures of my natural, neglected hair. Not dreads yet, but could be very soon! thanks for reading and God bless all of you!

Frustrated!

Introduce Yourself

First i mix salt and the baking soda together. About a half a cup of salt and half a cup of baking soda. Then i probably use about half a quart of water and then 3/4 of a cup of acv all together. I pour that evenly over my head. I let that sit for about two minutes then i scrub my whole scalp with Dr. Bronners. Once it is evenly lathered. I take my palms and scrub it in. I let that sit for another two minutes or so then i take the cup that i used to pour the ACV and BS and fill it to the brim twice to rinse. For drying, i just take the towel and twist it really tight around my head and then try to soak it up

Introduce Yourself

Im at around 4 months of neglect dreading. Woohoo! Right? Well today was wash day like i do about every 5 days or so. For some reason, it just feels like i washed ALL of my progress away. More than any other wash days. I use ACV, Baking Soda, and Dr. Bronner's lavender bar soap. Any thoughts, answers, recommendations? Thanks.
