Life Issues Facing Dreads
Thanks for the personal experiences and support everyone! I feel like there's an army of people on my side.

For the last three months I've decided to let my hair dread, my mother has been harsh andjudgmental about it. She insists that my dreadlocks don't look like the "coiled ones" she sees people with at malls. It angers me how someone who got their " dreadlocks " instant made at a salon is being compared to my journey by my mother like this. She calls my hair ratty and constantly makes snide remarks about it... I just wanted to encourage the dreading community to be self confident despite the negative remarks from even people close to you. I'm loving my journey and am proud to be growing dreadlocks.
I have relatives in Norristown PA so I know it's looking bad... I hope you and your home stay safe.
I'm glad that you know what you're passionate about and are pursuing a career you'll love! Your post is very inspiring. Finding one's passion is sometimes easier said than done though..

I haven't let my hair dread for long, but my dreadlocks have been a huge influence in my life. I'm simplifying my lifestyle and have become more easy going with things. My problem is, I'm entering my senior year of high school and am faced with college and career decisions. I think the typical description of a career sounds awful; I don't want to be in the same building doing the same things for the bulk of my life. I was wondering if anyone could advise how to incorporate my environmentalist values and new-found love for simplicity in an active career to work towards. The people I've interacted with on this site as a whole have an incredible peace of mind... What's your part in the world?
I'm in the same boat Chris! My hair has been dreading for about two and a half months, and I have tons of loose hair in the front. Did you have bangs before you let your hair dread? This shorter section of my hair just started staying together recently, but there's still plenty of free hair. I bought a crochet hook to weave the loose hairs into the dreads, but they ended up popping out again so I don't recommend trying it. Just be patient... I figure it'll work itself out.
I guess you're right Corinne- it all depends on the individual. And I don't suppose walking around with sweat in your hair is good forhygienicpurposes.
Steve, let me know if you figure it out ^_^
I understand that salt helps dreadlocks lock up faster, and of course there's lots of salt in one's sweat. I figured that the salt in sweat is good for them, but the sweat in sweat might not be... Can anyone give me input as to whether you should try to avoid sweating or welcome it as a positive thing for your dreads ?
