Thanks, both <3 This was the third time I tried (first two were backcombed, didn't work) and I was just so dead set on having real dreads I would do whatever it took :-) I'm soooo glad I did - I love them every day <3 Hair is just really different from one person to the next - mine locked so quickly, and my fried, who started hers at the same time, still has those teenager issues with loops in some of hers, and they just in general act very different from mine. It's good to remember the individual journey part - but for me it was also good to do something about the problems that freaked me out (the mold issue in the lumps) :-)

The one I posted yesterday was taken just before I posted :-) Yes, they dreaded so fast but that's not necessarily good! I'm not sure if it's in this thread but I had a lot of serious lumps that became moldy from washing late in the day and not drying and were just generally not comfortable at night, so I cut those - still good length for 4 years IMO :-)

Thanks! It's been so long - they're 4 years now and I still love them :-) They've grown quite a lot.

So it's been a while :-) My dreads have grown a lot and are doing great, no sign of moldy problems. All the fuzz is starting to form babies now. I've wrapped some, just for the colour splash which I love :-) One (front) i wrapped to make it congo because it was really thin at the roots, and this helped a lot.

Well, less talk, more photos :-)

Updo's:

Thanks, taye :-) I LOVE them :-)

So your lumps are not inflexible now? They dry as quickly as the rest?

My hair didn't even dry in 4 hours before I had dreads :-) And now it takes about 8-10 hours, I should think. The lumps, however, were a different story. They weren't even dry when I went to bed, if I washed in the morning. They formed super fast and then did not really change for 5 months. I could have waited for them to change, had they not been moldy :-)

Well, if you could use a cap to avoid getting it wet every day, that would probably be a good idea :-) I used to wash mine every day but stopped as soon as it started forming lumps. I think there are lots of things one can do to prevent mold, even if one does have lumpy dreads ;-)

Do you live in a warm climate? Do you feel your hair dries properly during the day? I know my lumps were always still wet when I went to bed, even if I washed in the morning. Would it be possible for you to avoid getting it wet every day?

Thank you, Heather :-)

It could very well be baking soda that wasn't rinsed out. The green thing definitely mold, though, the smell was unmistakeable, and well, it was green! :-/ Yup, hard water here too.

Sometimes some cutting is a very good solution, as you have experienced also :-) I'm glad you don't have discomfort anymore - 3" is a lot of hair to be pulled on and hurt :-( None of mine were particularly painful at any point, and they're all rather small at the roots (all 68 or so).

I think they're not as bad as mine, then. They were pretty inflexible, I think.

A little warmer than here, but not much. I think blow dryers could be a really good idea, especially if the alternative is being outside with wet dreads in a tam all day :-/

Yeah, mine take all day to dry, even now, so with the lumps it must have been more than a day.

And the lumps are pretty inflexible? That's how mine were. I can't remember - do you live in a warmer climate than me?
