middle-aged newbie dreadhead

Introduce Yourself

thought i'd add a couple of things that i've been doing that seem to be helping me.

i used to shake my hair out after a wash but since my hair is super soft it was actually undoing progress especially in the first 4-5 months. now i just squeeze out what water i can and then wrap it in a hair towel (kind of like a shamwow but made for hair).

i no longer wash my hair in the shower now. i was feeling like i couldn't really get to my scalp with it hanging down my back so on wash days i just go use my kids bathtub and shower sprayer and hang my head upside down over the bath tub and wash it that way. i'm able to scrub my scalp easier and i find that i can rinse it much better than when it was clinging to my back in the shower. i also wash it in the morning instead of evening which gives it the entire day to dry which it probably doesn't need because my hair is thin but i don't want to take any chances with getting mold.

sometimes on the in between days i use salt water to dry it a bit and make it more prone to knotting. i was just mixing it up in a spray bottle and spraying it on but i would end up with salt residue on my walls and bathroom counter from the over spray. yuck. since finding out that the ocean is 3.5% salt i was able to do a more accurate mixture and now i just make a jug of it. i wet my hair first and then just pour it over my hair while standing with my head over the bathtub again. i squeeze out the excess and then sit outside in the sun and read a book while it dries. its really helping to give my soft hair more grip which i hope will increase the knotting in the near future. the salt doesn't irritate my scalp at all.

i know i'm not that far into my journey and i'm still learning myself but i thought some of you guys might find some of my methods helpful to you, too:) {{hugs}}

Nooo! Dreads Causing a break out!

tell your friend to get a bottle of witch hazel and add 30 - 40 drops of tea tree oil to it. shake and apply using a cotton ball. my son uses it twice a day after a gentle cleaning and his face completely cleared up. i use it sometimes too. its refreshing when your feeling sweaty and yucky. make sure to shake it before use each time.

I told a friend about tea tree oil yesterday. Apparently the company that makes her acne medication stopped production for awhile due to a recall and she's struggling. Later, when someone else at my house got scratched by my cat, I offered them a bandaid and everyone said, "what, you don't have some magic herb to put on it?!?!" LOL

you can wash your face with baking soda and water. pour some baking soda in your hand and add water until you have a paste. if you have any tea tree oil, add a couple drops of that too. wet your face and then wash your face with the bs paste. don't scrub too hard though of you could irritate your skin and cause more breakouts. rinse really well.

don't do it too often or you'll dry out your skin. try to keep your hair off of your face during the day using a headband or sleeve from a tshirt. sweat and oils from your hair can cause breakouts.
