i'm actually hoping that mine will shrink like yours did. i sure would love to have short hair during the hot summer months ahead :)

we're all here for you. The snoods look really cute. I'm glad you found those and that you like how they look on you. As long as you have something to "hide" your dreads when you need to, just let them be. I'm proof that there is light at the end of the tunnel. So stay strong.

awwww. you guys are all so sweet. i feel the love:) i'm going to hang in there. i should've known it was going to be an uphill battle from the start. i had taken really good care of my hair for years and i never had to brush it because it would hardly knot even without using conditioner. i don't even own a brush! lol.

Amber- i tried the bs wash again last night. i used really hot water this time to dissolve it better and i added 2 drops of tea tree oil and 1 Tbs. of sea salt to the mix. my hair is definitely drier feeling today. so maybe i'll stick to this for a while and see if it helps things knot up. i'll alternate with my shampoo once in a while just to keep my scalp from freaking out.

Shanxon- thanks! i guess i did the whining for the both of us:) i feel a bit lonely sometimes in this journey because my family and others don't really understand it all. it's nice to know i can come here and get support and critique when i need it. i don't get why people think that all dreadies are dirty? but then again there's a homeless man that i see by the local grocery store and he has somewhat dreads but not the kind anyone on here would want. its almost like all his hair is matted to one side of his head and the layers of dirt and grime are holding it all together. ewwww :P

Magicmeganmama- thanks, mama! i know you've been there because i remember encouraging you:) i guess i just need to sit back and enjoy the journey no matter how frustrating it may be. i really do look awful in hats. lol:) i just don't have the face for them. i do however like the new snoods i've been making with a pattern i bought on etsy. (http://www.etsy.com/listing/68133816/basic-renaissance-snood-croche...). they're crocheted with thread which is a bit time consuming but i like how they fit me. i get a lot of compliments on them so that makes me feel good even though you wouldn't know all the craziness going on underneath. your so sweet to off up a headband from your shop. i actually have a couple of crocheted headbands that i made for myself. i look "okay" in them. lol:) i usually wear them around the house especially when i'm cooking and such so we don't get an extra surprise of hair in our meals. please don't pull anything from your etsy shop. if your like me, we all could use whatever money we can get from our etsy sales. i really do appreciate the offer though and your headbands are really beautiful.

Dolly- your just a ray of sunshine in all your posts:) thank you for your kind words and support. (((H*U*G*S)))

thanks, thundersquall:) the shampoo is great. i had a hard time finding it but it was worth it. i actually went to a target that was listed on the kiss my face website and they were clearancing the whole line. i would check your target and see if you can get some for a good price. unfortunately they only had the conditioner left so i had to buy it somewhere else.

i've tried t&r before on some sections but they fall out completely. not enough grip to my hair to keep it from unraveling. i'm just going to sit on my hands and let nature take its course and hope for a good outcome.

Thundersquall said:

Im glad the kissmyface worked out for ya heather, i had a feeling it would its good stuff! And if your progress is a concern consider doing TnR maybe on the rest of your hair? Heather said:

thanks:) i wash every other day or two. i just got the kiss my face whenever shampoo and its great. i used to have an oily scalp but since i don't wash everyday now my scalp is pretty normal. you might want to try desert essence tea tree lemon shampoo. it's made for oily scalp and hair. its great but a little too drying on my scalp right now. i'm going to try it again in the summer when it's not as dry out. makes your hair squeaky clean.

funny, my hair seems to be knotting/separating better on top. the under part is silky smooth. i'm preparing for a really weird mullet in the future.

Oh I'm sorry. I feel like that too, sometimes.
When i need to go someplace special, i put it up in an up-do/claw.

You could get a pretty clip even and pull it back.

I'm only at 2 months and know it's gonna get worse before it gets better.

What's your washing schedule? I have been washing every other day with Kiss My Face and using sea salt in a spray bottle and spraying it on the days i don't wash. [i work out every day and my scalp and hair get really greasy, even sleeping makes it greasy]

I also, prettyvigorouslytowel dry the underneath hair when i wash.

Underneath is where my hair isn't knotting, i could still run a combthroughit, its so smooth.

funny thing, i leave my hair down when i go out and it has a few bunches of tangles and looks very uncombed, but no one says anything. i just wonder what they are thinking.. lol

Hang in there!!

Kristina

Hey Heather, I agree with everyone on here, keep your head up and they are looking fine. :) I wanted to respond to this quote specifically because I too have really thin/fine hair and I was worried as well about thin, scrawny dreads and also gaps and such when mine started to shrink. I have to say after 4 years, friends today come to me and say they wish they could dread but they don't have thick hair and have fine, thin hair not even realizing I did too! :) So, don't worry about scrawny dreads because I'm pretty sure you will get the fullness you never had! :) Anyways, much love and good luck. You're at a very rough stage but once you overcome it (and you will), you'll be soo glad you did. :)

it's so frustrating, right? even harder in southern california because there really aren't very many dreadies around. i've only seen one at an art show i was in. i practically jumped her i was so excited. i've just wanted this for so long and really wish i had put other peoples opinions aside and done it in my 20's. i definitely had more hair then. lol:) thanks for all the love and support. (((hugs))) back to you :)

Panterra Caraway said:
Oh beautiful girl! I read your post and I wanted to hug you. You know, I do live in California also...I think only a bit of a drive away...You and I have been going through so many of the same things. I am nearing my 8 mo. mark and although I do see a tremendous amount of progress I am envious of many of the good folks here. You know how I have struggled, I have posted a few of my tantrums! LOL Don't feel alone, and for sure don't give up. I presently have what looks kind of like a smile going across the back of my head. No knots on the very bottom or top..and dreads in the middle with more on the right side than the left. I have loops smack dab in the middle of sections. Even on the really knotted ones, it is in the middle. People "in the know" realize that I am dreading..whether it is because I have told them or they have dreads themselves. But, the common stranger probably thinks that I have a tent I go to sleep in somewhere in the forest! LOL That is okay. When I want to feel alittle polished, I sweep it up in a kind of twist with the ends sticking out the top and a big claw clip to hold it and I pin a fake flower on the side. It actually looks pretty cute. The rest of the time, I just put on some lip gloss and think..."I look fierce!" Please know that you are not alone and also know that everything I have ever really treasured in this life, I had to fight hard for...fight that urge to give up! You are a beautiful soul...love you.

problem is that the beads aren't staying in my hair. they just fall out in a matter of hours even when i think they're in good. i need to find a way to roughen up my hair texture so they'll stay put.

Denise said:
Just an idea... if your sections are so small why not put a bead on two dreads? Combine two small ones?

thanks, crystal. your hair is really pretty and it looks like its knotting up nicely:) i was actually going to try bs again tonight. i was always having a problem with it leaving a residue on my scalp but i'm going to wash with my organic shampoo first and do the bs after and see what happens. i can't do the acv at all because it makes my hair super slick. we'll see how it goes. i just need my hair to have a little more grip to it.

Crystal O. said:

Oh it is happening! They look like they are on their wayto being beautiful dreads, and they will be! I've tried all sorts of stuff to try and accellerate the process like sea salt and wool sweater on my pillow etc., it just takes time...and sometimes a little help and I have to tell you the b/s wash dramatically changed my hair. I bought a residue free shampoo that I used a couple weeks after startingthe b/s wash, it made my scalp feel great, but loosened up a lot of the knotting. I now use that on my scalp, rinse, then pour the b/s wash over my hair and rinse again...either daily or every couple days and my hair seems to be knotting up like crazy. I also flip my hair in the shower and try to let the water run over it from each direction, odd I know, but I think it helps, and helps with rinsing. So anyway, maybe if you alternate your shampoo and the b/s wash? Just a suggestion. Keep the patience and faith. :) Love your locks, they will love you back :)

P.S. My boy took me out to dinner Sunday for V-day and I wore my hair down as proudly as I could with all the stares and whispering around me, I would look if I felt a stare and smile when I made eye contact and they would look away quickly. It's gotta be about attitude because they would stop staring. :) If you are happy with you, don't you worry about anyone else.

i think guys can get away with messy crazy hair more than girls can but i'm glad i'm not the only one with a messy head;)

Brandon Arnold said:
My dreads are equally as loopy as that one you are holding up in your pictures!

And, it is only five months. It's killing me that my hair is so messy and it feels like forever in some ways, but you just have to take it a day at a time.

I always wear a wool hat when I go to class, because I hate when people ask "oh dude wtf is up with your hair" but it's getting better day by day. The more I like them, the better they seem to look lol.

and it's not like your dreads aren't doing anything. All that loopy crazy messy stuff is a sign that it's working!

t&r doesn't work at all on my hair and no i haven't done any more backcombing. i feel like i've focused more on my hair in the last 5 months than i have in the last 5 years. i was a wash and go kind of girl. now i have to wash gently but make sure its all actually getting clean, keep things separated, sea salt sprays, etc. it's all just so much work and to have it respond so slowly is just really frustrating, you know? i just hope to one days soon be able to say i have dreadlocks.

Knottysleeves said:

You are soooo going to get there eventually, for sure! It's just taking longer than usual because your hair is so soft and resistant than most people's. But like Brandon said, all those loops are a sign that things ARE starting to happen!

Have you done any more twist & rip or tight backcombing on the completely straight sections to get things moving?
