almost brushed it all out :(

Dread Maintenance

i really wish you were here, too:( i don't know of anyone in my area with dreads. i feel like a i have a wealth of knowledge now compared to 5 months ago just because of all the wonderful help and information on this site. i just have terrible hair for dreadlocks. i didn't comb it out because i REALLY want this and i didn't want to regret it but it was tempting. i haven't seen anyone on here with hair similar to mine. i wasn't blessed with my mothers gorgeous thick hair instead i got my sperm donors high forehead and thin hair. doesn't work so well for a girl.

the backcombed one are kind of weird. they have this big squiggly "s" at the bottom thats really tight and then smooth hair for about 4 - 5 inch up. will that dread normally? i'll try to get a quick pic.

:-( I'm sad that it's not going well for you. I know how patient you've been all these months!

I'm almost tempted to say you need to roughen up your hair a bit (ie., slight damage) to get it to hold. The only sections that seem to finally be doing something are the ones that you've repeatedly done t&r / backcombing on, right? Your hair is in such good condition that it's kind of working against you. :-) I really wish I lived closer to you because I'd be happy to help out in person to get some stronger tangles going...

Dread Maintenance

i'm really trying to accept everything my hair does or doesn't do but being a girl i still want to look nice. i have some pretty small beads and i get them in my hair but they just slide right out in a matter of hours because my hair is so soft. i'll see if i can get smaller beads. my hair is sectioning into these really small sections so it's hard to find a bead that will hold. i have really thin hair. i'm going to post pictures of my hair next week for my 5 months then you'll get to see all the mess i'm dealing with. yes, i'm doing sea salt sprays and wool tams. i even wear the tam to bed sometimes.

almost brushed it all out :(

Dread Maintenance

my husband and i were going out on sunday to celebrate valentines day and i just about had a melt down. we rarely go out because of our busy schedules so this was pretty special. i had a nice outfit, a little bit of makeup and a mop on my head. i look like a homeless person(no offense to anyone who's homeless). i definitely look like i don't own a brush but i don't look like i'm dreading my hair either. i have about 7 sections that i backcombed last month that are going crazy and the rest is just messy hair. i seriously considered combing it all out that night.

it'll be 5 months next week and i'm feeling so defeated. my hair does not like to knot. i have some separating of sections and a little knotting at the tips but it's not progressing from there. it's been like that for months. i tried putting beads in but they all just fall out everywhere. i know i need to be patient but i see all these people on here that are around the same time frame as me and they have such wonderful progress. am i going to be one of the ones that has to wait 2 or 3 years for dreadlocks?

i don't mean to make this a pity party. i just want to know that someday i will get to leave the house without a hat or scarf on and feel proud of my hair. right now that is not an option:(

Separating...

Dread Maintenance

i haven't needed to split anything yet but i would definitely ask knottysleeves. she has experience splitting some of hers so she might have some insight that will help you.

lopsided knotting

Dread Maintenance

so my hair is starting to knot (finally) and i've got a bunch of beads holding sections together to encourage knotting. the problem i'm having is that the right side of my head is knotting faster than my left or back. i sleep on my right side so i'm assuming that why but how will it even out or am i in for a weird look for quite a while? sleeping on my left side is not possible do to a health problem so thats out of the question. any suggestions would be great:)

Bangs with dreadlocks...what to do

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

i was thinking about cutting bangs because i hate my forehead and i look better in bangs. i just don't want all the extra work that i would have to do to make them look nice everyday. i'm sure after time your hair will stop eating them though. good luck:)

Questions

Introduce Yourself

well since i'm still in the beginning of my journey right now it doesn't even look like i have dreads. it looks more like a big mess. so far no one but my immediate family knows of my journey. i usually have them covered up with a hat or scarf. i can't wait until i can where them as is. i'm a little too self conscious right now.

I totally forgot to get back to you on the kiss my face castle soap. I did get a few bottles from them. I've done a couple washes with it and it did it's job. Although I'm not 100% happy with it. I know a lot of people hate dread head hq, but I've always been happy using their shampoo. Seems to do a real good job.

new soap like dr. bronners?

Dread Maintenance

bummer. oh well. i think i'm going to try the whenever shampoo by them. thundersquall has had good results and i've read good reviews online, too. thanks!

I would think so too. I LOVE Kiss My Face and have a bathroom full of their products...they're only medium natural but the scents are so nice. But I can't use Dr. Bronners here, our well water in incredibly hard and Bronners leaves a nasty film on everything, including my skin and hair. Any castille soap would do the same thing because there isn't much variation in the ingredients.

I've been thinking about adding essential oils to the unscented residue free shampoo I do use...create my own!

new soap like dr. bronners?

Dread Maintenance

okay, then i'm definitely going to give it a try. unfortunately they don't have it at my target or walmart. i've heard that vitamin shoppe carries it so i'm going to try there next before i order it online. thanks!

I found mine at my local walmart heather. I hear they also sell it at target. If you are considering ordering it like i said i reccomend it; as an experiment i washed 5 days a week with the lime shampoo for two weeks and at the end i actually had three-four new baby congos forming. Plus i had no dandruff and hair felt just "right", instead of that dry, straw feeling when you overwash with a bad shampoo. No issues with hard water or anything either it lathers up sweet just be sure n rinse well.
