Dreading Methods

Sounds crazy! Such a shame that it had to end that way...

Dreading Methods

Haha, I just googled 'Weird Sistas' and this was the second link to show up. This and another discussion about them. Sorry to drag it up, but I wanted to have my say...

When I started with my dreads - nearly a year ago - I asked on here about which salon I should use, etc, and explained that I wanted to achieve "perfect" looking dreads. SE soon highlighted the error of my ways and made me think about the spirituality and individuality of having my OWN dreads - not something designed by someone else and, subsequently, destroyed by them through the use of waxes, etc.

Since then, I did create my own dreads (with a lil help from my wife) using the TnR method, and have never gone near wax. God knows it has been tempting to use wax on occasion - hoping for a quick fix - until remembering the consequences of committing such a sin. I think commandment no 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, AND 10 says 'thou must be patient'?! Very difficult sometimes, but spot on! :)

I have, however, dabbled with a crochet hook from time to time. Mainly because my impatience got the better of me, but also when I have felt that I have had to tidy my hair (for a job interview, a wedding, etc) - I gave into external peer pressure, I suppose. I also paid a visit to the Weird Sistas, as I liked their 'no chemical' approach to dreads and dread maintenance. Discussing how their approach was "different" to any other form of crochet method was interesting (!!), and their response to me saying that I use BS and ACV to wash my dreads was mildly amusing too. Oh, and that 'hair can't be trained to grow dreaded just yet', apparently... ;) They tidied my roots for me, but when I realised that what they did was not really any different to what I had previously done myself, I decided not to use them again. Oh, and for the reason that I'm steering well away from the crochet hook altogether now.

I could get where that [ever-so-slightly] obnoxious bloke (was his name Paul?) was coming from, about having his roots tidied. Not saying he was right, or that you guys are wrong, just that I understood his point of view. What was really disappointing and annoying though, was that he refused to listen to what was being said to him - even when he took his defences down and said that he would be more open-minded, he just couldn't accept that SE did NOTHING to his hair (other than keeping it clean and separating the congos) and still ended up with those beautiful locks. I did find it sad, however, that he was so publicly ripped to shreds by people on here. He obviously didn't help his cause with the way that he attacked others, but I have always found you guys more helpful than that. Hope I am not seen to be stepping out of line... Just saying.

I did read that someone suggested he leave his roots for a year, so that he would realise that root maintenance was totally unnecessary. Good call - I, too, am going to try really hard to give that a go. Feels like a vicious circle actually - those damn fuzzies around my scalp are SOOO annoying, but with me sticking a needle in them I'm not actually helping fix the problem in the long-term.

I have met a few of the Weird Sistas, and found them to be really nice people. Yes, I understand that what they are doing is totally unnecessary, but I can understand them taking advantage of the demand out there. Despite their claim of '100% natural dreads', they are certainly not helping to educate people along those lines, as you guys do on here, but as I sad, they have a business to run. Hey, I had no idea that dreads could be formed without using wax, and that you could actually have CLEAN dreads, before I found this site. I guess people just don't know the truth...

Anyway guys, I hope you don't mind me adding my thoughts to this one. Keep up all the good work!

Peace :)

herbs good for your head and dreads

Dread Products

Hi,

I'm thinking about making up one mixture of rosemary and thyme tea. Can I mix these two herbs (1/4 cup of each) and achieve a successful dandruff solution.

Also, I'm unclear as to whether I...

(a) leave the tea in my hair, and do not rinse until next wash,

(b) rinse out the next day, or

(c) rInse out within 20-30mins of applying it to my hair

Also, should I be soaking (pouring over) my head in the tea, or spraying it onto the dreads, for best results?

Thanks =)
