ends!

Dread Maintenance

sometimes they just get sucked in though. I wanted wispy ends, but my hair wanted otherwise. I think wispy ends are more feminine, and I like the way they look, but my hair had other plans and ate up all my ends. There was one point when I thought I'd get the better of it and conditioned the end of one to try to brush out the end, but it didn't work. Sometimes they just do what they want.If your hair is super loopy and it's fat all up until where these "tails" start it will probably gobble up a large bit of them, that's what mine did.

ends!

Dread Maintenance

Mine were like that for a while. It kinda bothered me because I thought the ends would never bunch up or loop or anything. But then, it all started sucking in all at once, and I got shrinkage. Check out my timeline if you want to see what happened. It is funny cuz the dread is like this ZXZX~~~ with the XZ being tangled parts, then it went like this ZXZ~8~ with some loops then ZXZXZX). That is the extent of my ascii artistic rendition of what happened. My timeline is a better reference LOL.

Will super straight, fine hair lock up by itself?

General Questions

I'll try to get some better pictures in good lighting with higher resolution sometime and post them up. At least with the contrasting colors in my hair you can see that there's a lot going on. LOL

Will super straight, fine hair lock up by itself?

General Questions

I just use baking soda rinse followed by a water rinse then diluted vinegar rinse then water again. It wont leave any residue in your hair and it cleans your hair very well. The vinegar part smells, I am not a fan of the smell of vinegar, but after you let it go through your hair and you rinse it you wont smell it any more.

Will super straight, fine hair lock up by itself?

General Questions

Mine did, and I didn't do any of the "maintenance" you do. I backcombed loosely to start them (very loosely because I was being lazy) and then I just ignored them. No rolling, no products not even salt water, washing with bs and eventually bs/acv, and mine are at 5 months. I did swim a lot when I first started (first month and a half) and I used to put a few beads in my hair till they got too thick to fit all the beads I have. Here's a pic I just took about 30 minutes ago. My hair was fine, straight and thin when I started (and also way longer).

hello!!! an introduction

Introduce Yourself

Synthetic fibers are bad, if you're going to keep extensions in switch to human hair as soon as you can or just remove the synthetic because it is a plastic and will goo up your hair as it deteriorates. A year is barely enough time to have dreads form! Most people don't have what would be considered full dreads in a year, but it depends on the hair. I would switch to baking soda/ acv rinse, it really helps them form without leaving any residue or disturbing already formed knots. If I ever do extensions, which I will if my hair doesn't get any length by next summer, I would only use human hair because then it knots and forms like hair and wont deteriorate into something weird and you can treat it like regular hair with blow drying or dyeing if you want.

Dreadlock depression?

Dread Maintenance

Keep them as they are, 5 months in is a good amount of time and they're well on their way. I backcombed mine and mine are tight and knotty and definitely not to be confused with some other hairstyle at this time. Check out my timeline pics.I also had to deal with people trying to tell me what to do and that they looked "not right", but unfortunately for those people IDGAF what they say any day of the week. I didn't like having to explain it to random strangers when I went out so I would put it in a tam, but now random strangers like my dreads. When I was only about 2 months in my partner's old professor from college visited and saw my fluffy mess in all it's glory and called them dreads. That was inspiration that at least SHE knew what was going on.It is hard, and I hate hiding them (but I hate more people asking me about them) and in due time they're definitely done. There will always be floofy/frizzy parts, just like in regular hair, but no professional will be able to do any maintenance to them at this young age that won't mess them up.I loved my dreads for their unique loops and bumps, also, and kinda got sad when the loops or bumps shrunk up and were less unique, but it's getting to that solid locked stage and shrinkage, which was the point of the journey, so it's still totally worth it. The loopy bumpy stage is the most fun stage, because your hair looks so wild and original. At least that's how I felt. People like to touch it at that stage, and the texture is very fun to feel.

If this is it, I am tempted to comb out!!!

Dread Maintenance

I have a few that are stiff as well, and it's just because they locked up super super super tight. I was concerned about one of them cuz it got all short fat and stiff, so I soaked it in jojoba oil and worked it in there, and since it was so tight it didn't untangle but it did get a little floppier (if that makes any sense). It is still stiffer than the others, and it shrank up a lot so I think it's because it got so tight.I bought that bodysplash oil that rawsum used to get rid of his wax not because I had wax to get rid of (I didn't use wax) but because it makes my nails super strong. It's quite conditioning as well so I occasionally put it in my hair, now that it's tight enough that I'm not worried about losing knots. My smaller ones are stiffer where they are tight, so maybe because they don't have as much hair they tighten up more or something? I'm not sure, but conditioning helped for the ones that bugged me the most, and I like you didn't want to look like johnny clean.

dread extensions?

Dread Maintenance

I know a few people with extensions. They used human hair, because synthetic can melt and get all nasty eventually, human hair is human hair and will dread up with your hair. The girl I know with extensions sewed them in, didn't crochet them in. She looks really good and they stayed in for a while. Sure it wont be your own hair if you decide to do it, but if you want to go ahead. There is a good tutorial on dreadlocktruth.com site.

Dreadlock Shrinkage - my results

General Talk

Oh yeah and also, I mentioned being wary that they wouldn't get legnth very fast because they shrank up so much, and I think it is because my roots shrank too so they were just so super tight that they felt short and sticking out everywhere. In just the 3 weeks or so since then either they've loosened at the roots a bit or my hair is growing well (probably the latter, I am taking mega vitamins because I've always had thin brittle nails and slow growing hair and wanted to combat it) and it's not feeling like they're laying funny or super super short now. It's still short, but it's not looking like it will take forever to get some length. I know as my length comes in it will be slower because it will be tangling into the dreads as it grows, but it's not seeming that bad anymore.Time heals everything LOL
