I am in the process of getting dreadlocks. Why do I feel like a fake?

General Talk

I feel the same way...with a similar situation. I just figure that I'm evolving, and I may not stay this way (dreaded and casual/hippyish) but it's an experience. Better than staying the same person for 80 years! How boring would that be?Just remember that you don't have to BE anyone. You are changing and trying new things all the time...learning about yourself. Most dreadies aren't judgmental about why you have your dreads...like if you work somewhere corporate or dress preppy you won't be accepted. We all understand that it's a specific experience that SO many people never give themselves the opportunity to have.Just live in the moment. Enjoy who you are right now. Don't worry about who you were before or who you will be in the future. Take it all as it comes.

Which came first, the hippie or the dread?

General Talk

Definitely agree that if you need to shower, do it! lol I lived on the island of Okinawa for two years...and I had to shower at least twice a day there! Of course, not only was it the weather, but I was aircraft maintenance in the military so I got all greasy and sweaty. lol

Which came first, the hippie or the dread?

General Talk

I started out wanting dreads because I had seen all the cool videos on crocheting and how tight and manicured it looked...then I did it (with extensions) and it just felt wrong. So I decided to do it with twist and rip.Suddenly I find myself using more natural products. Bought handmade soap for my dreads, used it on my whole body! Finding my acne is clearing up too! Now instead of dying my hair with chemical products, I'm drawn to henna! I find myself browsing aluminum free deodorants on etsy!I'm not showering as often as I was before, and I still don't stink! Recently there was an article in my local paper on people who don't shower. They get what they need from a wash cloth. One girl said that there has never been a time where we needed to shower less, but we've never showered more! How true! Our lives are so sterile, and yet we feel the need to wash every inch of our bodies once, sometimes twice a day!I just can't believe how dreading my hair has changed my outlook on life. I'm loving it!

How to combine dreads?

Dreading Methods

I'm almost at 5 weeks with my twist n rip dreads...I made them so so small though, now I'm wishing I had some bigger ones. I know they'll fatten up later, but these are smaller than a pencil. They are pretty tight already, I had a lot of damage and it seems to have accelerated the dreading. So how to I combine them into a larger dread? I haven't even had to separate any of these that I want to combine so I can't just stop separating them....should I bead them together?

Thanks...I'm actually really unhappy with the way that one (the sun) turned out...but I just bought some more supplies so I'll be churning out higher quality stuff asap! More like that, on the way!

I'll ship anywhere, once I'm sure that they are good enough! lolRight now I'm putting the glaze on after baking...but I'm going to experiment some more with my methods. I have had a little trouble with peeling...not bad so far but again, I'm working some kinks out.I'm thrilled that people like them so far! I'll let you know in about a week if I'm ready to sell/trade!

lolThese are the only ones I've ever made...so they are still in the testing process! I have a couple guinea pigs that will be trying them out and giving me feedback. I don't want to sell or trade any before I know they are good enough quality. I'll let you know when I'm ready! Thanks for the compliment though...that means a lot!
